Job Description

The Recruiter/Family Engagement Coordinator of the ASU College Assistant Migrant Program (CAMP) Scholars grant in the School of Transborder Studies serves as the primary liaison between prospective students, parents, Migrant Education Programs, and statewide community organizations that serve MSFW communities. The CAMP Project is a federally-funded college access and retention program for the children of Arizona’s migrant seasonal farmworkers (MSFW). The activities of the project include outreach and recruitment; FAFSA, college, and scholarship application assistance; financial awards, financial literacy workshops, and financial aid counseling; Bienvenida orientation program; educational programming; cultural activities, leadership training, and family engagement activities.

Under the supervision of the ASU CAMP Project Director, the Recruiter/Family Engagement Coordinator engages in outreach to, student recruitment from, and engagement with the MSFW community. Successful individuals in this position have excellent bilingual (English/Spanish) communication and customer service skills – both oral and written as well as a strong background in community engagement. They can plan, organize, and implement to successfully complete complex, multipronged initiatives. Other characteristics that provide the framework for success are attention to detail, sensitivity to characteristics and needs of low-income, first-generation, under-represented, and/or MSFW students, and a passion for MSFW student success.

Essential Duties

  • Extensive travel (including overnight stays) throughout Arizona to recruit ASU CAMP-eligible students and visit students and families in off-worksite locations.
  • Develop and implement culturally tailored recruitment/outreach plans annually, being mindful of trends that affect recruitment strategies.
  • Serve as liaison between ASU CAMP Scholars, ASU outreach programs, and community agencies.
  • Plan and execute events to provide information and opportunities to raise awareness of migrant youth and families about educational access and opportunities including referrals to ASU programs.
  • Disseminate educational and financial information (including financial literacy, FAFSA completion, and scholarship eligibility) in Spanish and English to pre-college youth and families.
  • Maintain interest and applicant management system to track information on potential ASU CAMP students and confirm their MSFW status; provide data for reports as requested by Project Director and/or Principal Investigator.
  • Assist CAMP-eligible students with the application process for university admission, financial aid, fee waivers, scholarships, and registration.
  • Coordinate with the CAMP Scholar program, ASU Office of Financial Aid and Admissions, Registrar, and Residential Life to ensure completeness of application(s) and required forms for applying and admitted students.
  • Provide input to Project Director on applications to determine acceptance or on other project documents to make decisions pertaining to Project.
  • Develop culturally tailored information in Spanish and English to educate families about the resources available to ASU students and the transitions they will experience.
  • Deliver customized college visits and tours to migrant youth and families in collaboration with the Academic Success/Student Development Coordinator, ASU Outreach, and CAMP Scholars Alumni Corps.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate the parent engagement component of the transition program and subsequent family engagement activities.
  • Design, coordinate logistics (i.e., scheduling, participant communications, post-event activities), and conduct parent workshops responsive to expressed needs and interests of CAMP families, and the parent component of the Bienvenida program.
  • In conjunction with other Project staff, create print/online communications (i.e., newsletters, brochures or flyers, social media) and marketing campaigns in Spanish and English; coordinate process from development through printing and distribution.
  • Interact and maintain liaison with students, faculty, staff, ASU units, and outside/community agencies in publicizing and facilitating Project objectives.
  • Meet regularly with Project Director; participate in ongoing project planning and evaluation activities.
  • As feasible, assist with planning logistics for non-recruitment Project workshops, meetings, events, or symposiums.
  • Attend U.S. Department of Education and the Office of Migrant Education state, regional and national conferences, as budget allows.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three (3) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a graduate degree in a relevant field or graduate-level coursework, with at least two years of experience working in outreach and recruitment
  • Evidence of effectivecommunication skills in English and Spanish
    • Experience making public presentations in English and Spanish to a variety of audiences
  • Experience with and/or sensitivity to characteristics and needs of MSFW and their rural communities or other underrepresented populations
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective collaborations with families, school districts, local communities, and organizations to recruit eligible CAMP students
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial aid and university admissions processes
  • Experience in maintaining accurate project records and compile special reports
  • Experience in working independently
  • Experience in coordinating activities and establishing priorities
  • Experience in event planning
  • Demonstrated knowledge with social media
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and virtual platforms

Working Environment

  • Activities are generally performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse associated with the daily use of a desktop computer.
  • Frequent in-state travel to meet with prospective students and their families, high schools, attend college/career fairs, and meet with migrant education program coordinators, school counselors, and project partners, and occasional out-of-state travel for training is required.
  • Evening and weekend staffing of Project activities.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including but not limited to computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone, and associated computer/technology peripherals.
  • Ability to work effectively within a complex structured team.
  • Works under the direction of the Project Director.
