Job Description

Sun Devil Athletics seek part-time Lifeguards who, under the direction of the Manager for Mona Plummer Aquatic Complex, oversees the aquatic complex, ensuring the safety of the patrons in the swimming area. Adheres to NCAA and Pac-12 rules and regulations, as well as the policies and procedures of the department, the university, and the Arizona Board of Regents.

Essential Duties

  • Monitors activities at the pool to prevent accidents.
  • Rescues swimmers in danger of drowning.
  • Administers First Aid and/or appropriate rescue techniques in event of injury or incident.
  • Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards; enforces and adheres to pool rules and regulations.
  • Follows emergency action plan and procedures established in the event of an emergency.
  • Maintains order in the pool and adjoining areas; reports dangerous conditions and unsafe equipment to the supervisor.
  • Inspects facilities for cleanliness, completes general pool cleaning and maintenance duties.
  • Responsible for the availability and safekeeping of emergency equipment (rescue tubes, backboard, signs and other equipment).
  • Provides general information on pool operation to patrons.
  • Performs other duties deemed appropriate by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Must possess current Lifesaving Certificate and First Aid Certificate and CRP/AED Certificate upon employment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to pass a water test to a depth of 18 feet at interview.
  • Lifeguard experience (1 year).
  • Experience using pool vacuuming system, lane lines, take up reels, and other competitive aquatic equipment.
  • Experience in reacting quickly and calmly to emergencies.
  • Experience in decision-making and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skill.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed outdoors in extreme weather conditions subject to varying periods of sitting.
  • Stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Swim for varying lengths of time and up to a depth of 18 feet to perform work.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 100 pounds
  • Constantly required to climb into lifeguard stands and climb in and out of swimming pool (with or without the use of pool ladders).
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, including resolution of conflicts.
  • Clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Hours are to be determined, must be able to work 15 hours a week but no more than 19 hours a week; must be able to work weekends, holidays and special events.
  • Pool vacuuming system, lane lines, take up reels, and other competitive aquatic equipment.
