Job Description

Financial Services seeks an Accountant for the Debt, Plant, and Capital Asset Management Accounting
area who will: process financial transactions, review and interpret monthly financial data to find and account for new assets; prepare journal entries; reconcile ledger accounts; process and approve accounting transactions in the University's online financial system; prepare spreadsheets using Excel; assist with the biennial inventory process; and communicate with departments and/or university staff to ensure compliance with University policy and procedures and standard accounting
procedures.

The successful candidate, not presently employed within Financial Services, will be paid a signing bonus of $750 and a $1,250 bonus after completing six months of employment with the department.

Essential Duties

  • Assists with identifying and properly accounting for new assets, maintaining ASU's current asset records and, completing monthly and annual asset ledger reconciliations.
  • Communicates with departments across all ASU campus' to obtain information about newly purchased assets and to inventory existing assets.
  • Performs a broad scope of complex accounting duties, including preparing indicate journal entries, reconciling balance sheet accounts, analyzing accounting data, research, and respond to accounting-related questions for other university departments and staff.
  • Monitors compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and university regulations.
  • Approves department transactions and supplier invoices within designated limits.
  • Assists in the preparation of detailed asset reports for internal and external users on an annual and ad-hoc basis. Prepares Excel spreadsheets utilizing advanced functions.
  • Helps manage student workers.
  • Participates in fiscal year-end close and the preparation of work papers, schedules, and journal entries in accordance with GAAP/GASB standards.
  • Assists in audits and prepares audit requests as directed.
  • Maintains knowledge of relevant laws, and regulations, and evaluates appropriate professional and related legal literature as assigned.
  • Assists in implementing new procedures and GASB pronouncements as appropriate.
  • Performs any other ad hoc projects or duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field AND one (1) year of professional accounting experience; OR, Five (5) years professional accounting experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Evidence of a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting.
  • Experience in preparing detailed financial reports and statements.
  • Experience in capital asset accounting.
  • Experience in using database software.
  • Experience in using Excel.
  • Experience in utilizing accounting software and performing account reconciliations. Demonstrated
  • knowledge of GAAP and accounting principles.
  • Experience in a diverse, service-focused environment. Experience using automated online financial
  • systems.
  • Experience using Microsoft applications.
  • Experience in a high-volume customer service environment.

Working Environment

  • Work in an office setting and use office equipment (i.e., computers, printers, copiers, calculators, telephones).
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time, travel moderate distances to perform work, use hands/fingers for repetitive motions.
  • Communicate to perform essential duties.
  • Read-interpret written and oral instructions/directions.
  • May require lifting of items weighing up to 25 lbs.
