Description

The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU) seek applicants for tenure-track or tenured faculty positions in the area of industrial decarbonization. This search represents one part of ASU's further expansion into the West Valley campus to broaden access, build new research capability, and advance community partnerships. It includes establishment of the School of Integrated Engineering, the newest of the eight Fulton Schools, where we are building a vibrant and differentiated research platform for solving some of society’s most pressing problems. Candidates will have the opportunity to support the Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institute, EPIXC, that is the U.S. Department of Energy’s 7th such institute. EPIXC is a public-private partnership headquartered at ASU with partners from national laboratories, universities, and industries across the nation. The EPIXC mission is aimed at securing U.S. manufacturing competitiveness in a global economic environment that increasingly demands eliminating carbon emissions by developing the technologies and workforce required to replace fossil fuel-based heating with electric heating in industries such as steel, concrete, glass, and food and beverage.

Particular areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Expertise in the design and implementation of integrated industrial processes and related systems-level analyses built on a foundation of robust data and innovative computational models. This includes integration of analysis platforms (e.g., life-cycle, social-impact and techno-economic analysis) into advanced decision engineering and science.
  • Industrial processes which utilize cleaner electricity, hydrogen and other greener fuels, carbon management technologies and based on a circular economy. This includes processes which lead to energy savings, lower environmental impacts, and/or create new supply chains for stressed resources. All aspects of industrial process research would be considered, including modeling of processes for evaluating industrial scalability and development of digital twins for optimization and monitoring.

We seek applicants who will contribute to our academic programs, promote transdisciplinary teaching and research, and help the university to achieve its aspirations, including enabling student success, transforming society, valuing entrepreneurship, and conducting use-inspired research. Faculty members in the Fulton Schools of Engineering are expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program, adopt effective pedagogical practices in the development and delivery of graduate and undergraduate courses, advise both undergraduate and graduate student research and projects, and undertake service activities.

Appointments will be at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor rank commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments, beginning August 2024. Although the tenure home may be in any of the Fulton Schools, the School of Integrated Engineering is of primary focus for this search.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in Electrical/Electronics/Mechanical/Chemical/Industrial Engineering or related discipline by the time of appointment
  • Evidence of excellence in research, as appropriate to the candidate’s rank
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching, as appropriate to the candidate’s rank

Desired qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to a collaborative, inclusive, and transdisciplinary approach to research and teaching
  • Commitment to mentoring students and delivering courses in multiple technology-enhanced formats and innovative pedagogy
  • An appreciation for entrepreneurial activities

Application Instructions

Application deadline is January 11, 2024. Applications will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis for a reserve pool. Applications in the reserve pool may then be reviewed in the order in which they were received until the position is filled. Candidates will be asked to create or use an existing Interfolio Dossier to submit the following:

  • Cover letter
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Statement describing research interests (two pages maximum)
  • Statement describing teaching interests and philosophy (two pages maximum)
  • Contact information for three references

The ASU Charter states, “ASU is a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom it excludes, but by whom it includes and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value; and assuming fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural and overall health of the communities it serves.” The Fulton Schools of Engineering are dedicated to cultivating excellence, delivering innovation that matters, encouraging bold thinking, fostering a community of learning and collaboration and building a foundation for all to be successful. Applicants are encouraged to address how their past, current and future activities align with the ASU Charter and Fulton Schools of Engineering values in their application materials.
