Description

Arizona State University has embarked on a multi-year project to develop novel Compact X-ray Free Electron Laser (CXFEL) to generate attosecond coherent X-rays and develop multiple science end stations, including a suite of AMO instruments. We invite applications for a Research Scientist position that entails the development of new methods for using soft-x-rays and ultrafast few-cycle laser pulses to probe charge dynamics in atoms, molecules, and interfaces. The areas of research span a range of topics, underpinned by studies of correlated attosecond electron motion, and coupled femtosecond electron-nuclear dynamics in complex systems. The successful applicant will join a team of experts in constructing the AMO end stations at the Compact X-ray Free-Electron Laser (CXFEL) under the umbrella of a recent NSF midscale research infrastructure award. The successful candidate will implement charged particle spectroscopies, in the form of velocity map imaging, and coltrims coincident imaging, enable the attosecond-resolved pump-probe studies with timing stabilization between the CXFEL and femtosecond OPCPA, and participate in commissioning experiments.

Essential Duties

Construction, assembly, and implementation of AMO end station equipment, data acquisition and analysis using co-axial velocity map imaging, coincident coltrims electron-ion imaging set up, operating femtosecond OPCPA laser, and the timing, controls and diagnostics of photon and x-ray beams. Training and supervising early-career scientists and engineers, and graduate and undergraduate students. Highly skilled technical writing including lab reports, scientific presentations and publications, and grant applications. Working in multidisciplinary teams that span different research areas and academic units.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Optics, Physical Chemistry, or a closely related field.
  • At least 3 years of postgraduate experience involving charged particle detection techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ultrafast and/or x-ray spectroscopy
  • Excellent verbal, presentation, and technical report writing skills.
  • Ability to work within multidisciplinary project team.

Application Instructions

Applicants should send a cover letter specifying relevant qualifications and training, curriculum vitae, statement of current research interests and expertise (2-page maximum), contact information for at least three professional references, and list of recent publications by 11/20/2023. If the position is not filled, review will continue every week thereafter until the search is closed.

A background check is required for employment. Arizona State University is a VEVRAA Federal Contractor and an Equal Opportunity/Afirmative Action Employer.
