The Gary K. Herberger Young Scholars Academy at Arizona State University invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible, 1.0 FTE, Middle and High School Math Instructional Professional.

Under administrative direction, teach math curriculum with focus areas in Algebra and Geometry at Gary K. Herberger Young Scholars Academy, a Middle and High School for highly gifted students, on ASU’s West Valley campus. The 2024-2025 school year will run from July 29, 2024, through May 23, 2025.

Essential Functions:

The successful candidate will:

• Facilitate learning in a middle and high school mathematics program, with a focus on Algebra and Geometry.
• Identify, select, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs.
• Provide an educational atmosphere where gifted students have the opportunity to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, and social growth.
• Organize and implement an instructional program that will result in students achieving academic success.
• Maintain and foster good working relationships with students, parents, faculty, and educational partners.
• Teach elective courses for Middle and High School students based on expertise and interest.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor or leadership team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Implement instructional activities and products of students' learning by using current technologies, including, but not limited to hardware, software, and web tools.
• Implement instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in personally and socially meaningful learning experiences.
• Identify, select, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs.
• Assist in assessing changing curricular needs and offers improvement plans.
• Maintain effective and efficient record-keeping procedures.
• Provide a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process.
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with parents on a weekly basis.
• Collaborate weekly with peers to enhance the instructional environment.
• Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and the community.
• Ensure that student growth and achievement are continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area, and/or program classification.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, and peers.
• Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as: meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, and coordinating.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

he Gary K. Herberger Young Scholars Academy is a learning environment designed for highly gifted students in grades 7-12 located on the Arizona State University West campus. Funded in part by an endowment from the Herberger Family and supported by ASU, the Gary K. Herberger Young Scholars Academy was founded to address the needs of academically and intellectually gifted students in the Phoenix area. The Herberger Academy accepts qualified students who have completed the 6th-grade curriculum and are 11 years of age by the student start date. Designed for gifted students who thrive in a highly engaging learning environment, the academy personalizes students’ education by merging individual academic talents and interests with advanced college preparatory coursework and mentorship opportunities. Students at the academy experience a broad-minded, paradigm-shifting education. Herberger Academy scholars engage with dedicated instructors in a small and caring community, with the resources available at a major research university. Upon enrolling in the academy, students first become immersed in an integrated middle school-level curriculum at an accelerated pace. They then complete high school credits while exploring and pursuing their intellectual interests through Cambridge coursework and connections made accessible at Arizona State University.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited university.
• Three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
• Experience teaching middle school and/or high school Math curriculum.
• Ability to present a valid fingerprint clearance card upon hire.

Desired Qualifications:

• Master’s degree from an accredited university.
• Degree in Gifted Education and/or Gifted Endorsement.
• Evidence of interest in developing professional knowledge and experience in gifted education.
• Evidence of knowledge and understanding of the cognitive, social, and emotional characteristics, needs, and problems found in gifted students as a result of their asynchronous development.
• Demonstrated ability to individualize and make use of techniques for teaching gifted students.
