Description

The School of Molecular Sciences (SMS) at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a full- time, nine-month Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor position with an anticipated start date of August 2024. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure eligible position, renewable on an academic year basis (Aug 16 – May 15), contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the university. The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for teaching at the undergraduate level in general chemistry, but may also be asked to contribute to teaching in other chemistry programs, depending upon prior experience. Courses may include those in both in-person and online formats. In addition to teaching, responsibilities will include supervising teaching assistants and junior faculty, undertaking unit, college, and university-level service, and developing course materials and future program plans in conjunction with other faculty and staff.

The School of Molecular Sciences at Arizona State University is an organization of more than 65 faculty members, 100 staff, and 2000 graduate and undergraduate students who work at the forefront of science and technology innovation and education. This includes approximately 1,800 undergraduate students (immersion and online), spread across three bachelor’s degrees in general chemistry and three in chemistry. SMS influences and impacts broad university-wide initiatives in fundamental science, health, sustainability, energy, food-water-climate, security, materials, manufacturing, space exploration and other endeavors of advanced technology.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifictions:

Assistant Teaching Professor

  • PhD degree in chemistry or biochemistry, or a closely related field by the time of appointment
  • Ability to teach in digital environments such as Canvas (asynchronously and/or synchronously)
  • One year of post-secondary teaching experience in general chemistry
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety policies
  • Organizational and communication skills (as evidenced by the completed application materials)
  • Effective teaching ability (as evidenced by included peer and/or student reviews)
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students and communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter. https://www.asu.edu/about/charter-mission.

Associate Teaching Professor

  • In addition to the required qualifications stated above, the successful candidate in this rank should provide evidence of at least five (5) years of college or university-level teaching in general chemistry or a related field
  • Effective teaching ability (as evidenced by teaching evaluation, course development, and innovative teaching practices)
  • Evidence of making a contribution to curriculum development, programmatic responsibilities, and departmental service responsibilities, such as faculty committees
  • Evidence of scholarship or research in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical education

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in creating curriculum and teaching general chemistry both in-person and online
  • Record of using active learning and non-traditional models of instruction
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving and understanding the particular needs of online students
  • Experience teaching general chemistry lab course(s)
  • Experience developing general chemistry lab course curriculum
  • Evidence of activities consistent with the ASU Charter and Design Aspirations
  • Experience supervising and mentoring teaching assistants
  • Evidence of collaborative activities with other faculty and staff
  • Participation in the higher education community and professional development activities (for example, authoring educational and scientific publications, presenting at conferences, attending workshops, etc.)
