Description

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure eligible Assistant Teaching Professor position in Geographic Information Science (GIS). We especially encourage applicants who can contribute to teaching across the GIS curriculum. Particular needs at this time include introductory lecture and laboratory courses in GIS, Remote Sensing, and GIS applications.

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching in SGSUP’s Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degree programs in a variety of modalities (in-person, hybrid, and online). The Assistant Teaching Professor will be responsible for eight (8) courses each academic year that will include an array of courses primarily, but not exclusively at the undergraduate level. Some of the course load may include assisting in the development of new courses or transition of existing courses into online teaching modalities. The Assistant Teaching Professor will also maintain a service load of 20% FTE which will include serving on unit and/or college committees, and supporting our students through various mentoring activities.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in GIS or related field by the time of appointment.
  • Evidence of teaching or mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and manage multiple tasks.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, and student communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Canvas learning management system.
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS software
  • Knowledge of Python programming
  • Knowledge of spatial statistics
  • Experience teaching online and/or developing online educational materials.
