Job Description
The Medical Assistant works as an integral member of the ASU Health Services Health Care Team in caring for the students, faculty and staff at ASU and performs both front office and back office duties. The Medical Assistant draws blood administers injections and immunizations and prepares lab samples, measures vital signs, processes patient check-ins and assists providers with patient care. This position will have varied hours and may require some Saturday coverage. In addition, this position may be scheduled at our Tempe, Polytechnic, Downtown or West campus.

Essential Duties
- Assist in the on-site lab by drawing blood, performing CLIA waived tests and entering lab orders
- Interview patients to obtain health history and checks pulse, temperature, blood pressure, weight, height, vision and hearing and record data accurately on patients' charts
- Assist clinicians in therapeutic procedures such as dressing wounds and applying and removing casts
- Responsible for taking a leadership role in cultivating, creating and ensuring student participation in ASU Spirit, Pride and Tradition while instilling institutional affiliation and college pride
- Assist clinicians with exams and minor surgeries
- Prepare treatment rooms, ensuring that all instruments and supplies are present
- Administer electrocardiograms and attaching electrodes to specified areas of patient's body
- Sterilize and clean instruments used in examinations and/or surgeries
- Maintain a clean and hygienic environment
- Enter patient charges and update student vaccination information on the computer
- Process visit encounter records and maintain designated files
- Provide training and work direction to student assistants
- Answer telephone and provide routine information to callers, routing difficult questions to clinicians
- Schedule appointments for clinicians and patients, including the check-in and check-out process
- Oversee inventory and requisition supplies
- Comply with all ADHS policies and ASUHS policies and procedures
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of an approved or accredited Medical Assistant training program; OR, having been directly supervised by the same Health Care Practitioner, or Provider Group, for at least 2000 hours before February 2, 2000.
Desired Qualifications
- Evidence of being a Certified Medical Assistant
- Paid experience as a Medical Assistant (1 year)
- Experience in working in a higher education health setting
- Experience in working with an electronic medical record (preferably PointnClick)
- Experience in scheduling patient appointments including the check-in and check-out process.
- Demonstrated knowledge of both front and back office duties including: phlebotomy; vaccination administration; taking patient vital signs; assisting in minor surgical procedures; women's health procedures; and preparing lab specimens for transport.
- Experience in: orthopedic splinting; performing CLIA-waived testing (e.g. rapid strep testing, rapid flu testing; urine pregnancy testing, and urine dipstick analysis)
- Experience working with reliable attendance and time management
- Evidence of effective communication skills

- Assist in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician and follow standing orders
