Job Description

At Arizona State University’s Knowledge Enterprise, the Data Analytics team provides sponsored and research project reporting, analysis, and data visualization. Our services make it possible for university stakeholders to acquire insights quickly, even in the face of today’s growing data complexity. We specialize in data visualization using a variety of tools such as Power BI, Tableau and Excel to suit your specific needs. The Data Analytics team works to translate business needs and questions into technical solutions for large, system-wide projects; use Business Intelligence (BI) tools to create reports and query objects for executive level reporting; provide BI tools support to business users and colleagues; serve as the liaison between the business organization, leadership, and the BI

In this position the tools, systems, reports, and dashboards you work to develop, support and maintain will provide critical insight into research data to aid in decision-making. This position is critical as it provides support through design, development and maintenance of various dashboards, investigating business software, automating data imports, and developing and managing systems. A key and critical skill and ability of the successful candidate for this position is to review and analyze research data, while discovering and identifying patterns within the data, and organizing the data into easily digestible applications for use by staff and leadership. You will work to translate critical requirements into technical solutions.

Essential Duties

  • Generates insights, solutions and recommendations that drive high-quality decisioning across the university
  • Delivers quality and relevant analytics solutions across a wide range of analytics technologies and architectures including big data platforms, enterprise data warehouses, and multiple reporting and analytics frameworks and tools
  • Applies knowledge of advanced mathematics/statistical/computer science methods, theories, and standards to define problems, collect data, and analyze enterprise business results and relevant external data
  • Utilizes data analysis and modeling skills to highlight performance, risk, and opportunities and to identify and generate key insights which support development of action plans to achieve annual business targets
  • Acts as an analytics resource in business meetings and strategy sessions to facilitate decisions grounded in data, and to provide consultation and recommendations to the leadership team on the best approaches to data driven solutions to corporate problems
  • Transforms data into insights and synthesize insights into stories
  • Clearly and effectively communicate data stories to leadership to influence actions that provide value to the business; drive a culture of data storytelling through visually portrayed insights and dashboards
  • Data mine for trends and anomalies, analyzing multiple datasets and program metrics to determine correlation versus causation
  • Oversight of monthly reporting, audit processes, and ticketing systems
  • Oversees and maintains sponsor and unit data within an enterprise research administration system.
  • Identifies and assesses potential data sources needed. This is done by gathering and eliciting requirements using interviews, requirements meetings, surveys, document analysis, site visits, business process descriptions, use cases, scenarios, and workflow analysis.
  • Assisting customers and stakeholders with prototype development and implementation (creation, testing, review, implementation).
  • Assists with creating and delivering end-user training and documentation.
  • Works closely with development teams on product design; makes recommendations to enhance support and usability. Validates data solutions meet requirements and service-level agreements.
  • Participates in system administration functions including, but not limited to: data validation, duplicate resolution, system change requests and system integration/user acceptance testing to ensure ongoing integrity and security of data consistent with university policies and procedures. Assumes or coordinates other duties or projects as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a business, information technology or closely related field and two (2) years’ experience in data modeling or database design using SQL or similar language, BI tool use and administration as well as user training/documentation development experience OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Business Intelligence tool architectures, functions, and features.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of developing queries for reporting and analysis.
  • Experience in being a self-starter with ability to solve complex problems.
  • Experience in communicating complex, conceptual and technical concepts to a variety of audiences both in writing and orally.
  • Experience working both independently and in collaboration with a variety of individuals.
  • Experience working effectively in an environment requiring balancing multiple competing deadlines and priorities.
  • Experience in managing multiple tasks simultaneously and exhibit leadership skills to achieve results.
  • Ability to lead by example in communicating, participating, and encouraging support of the institution’s sustainability programs.
  • Ability to stimulate changes in individual, institutional and corporate behaviors to create a more sustainable environment.:
  • Experience in Research Administration strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Research Administration including its major components – Proposal and Award processes experience is highly preferred
  • Experience with Excel and Pivot Tables
  • Evidence of effective communication skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with a variety of individuals
  • Experience in problem resolution skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of SQL and relational and multidimensional designs
  • Experience in SQL, SAS, Python, or R programming
  • Experience in data visualization tools, such as Tableau or PowerBI
  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistics, mathematics, or data analytics
  • Evidence of effective communication skills, with experience presenting data interpretation and insights to non-technical audiences
  • Experience with (and patience for) creating new analytics processes for an early-stage environment
  • Experience with strong judgment, interpersonal skills, and an ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of complex business problems and translate them to mathematical/statistical questions/hypotheses that can be answered through analytics that deliver actionable insights to business partners
  • Evidence in being a highly analytical, inquisitive, proactive, problem solver, with a strategic mindset.
