Job Description

Under the supervision of the Section Chief Physician, the Lead Sports Medicine Physician performs all the duties of an ASU Health Services (ASUHS) physician and performs educational, administrative and supervisory duties of considerable complexity for an assigned medical section. As an ASUHS physician, the Lead Physician is responsible for the practice of medicine including diagnosis and treatment of university students, faculty and staff in an ambulatory, out-patient care facility; providing service and educational activities (e.g. health promotion, wellness concepts and preventive health care) within the university; consulting with and supervising other healthcare professionals; and teaching undergraduate and graduate students and post-graduate resident physicians. Other responsibilities may include provision of medical care to the disabled, providing and/or supervising women's health care or providing other specialty services. The Lead Physician educational, administrative and supervisory duties include consultation with and supervision of other healthcare professionals (physicians, nurse practitioners, etc.); directing continuing educational programs for healthcare professionals or affiliated healthcare professionals (trainers, physical therapists, medical assistants, etc.) for assigned medical section; teaching of undergraduate and graduate students, medical students, and post-graduate resident physicians; and serving as the primary contact for research activities of the assigned medical section. In the absence of the Section Chief, the Lead Physician will assume the duties of the Section Chief for the assigned medical section.

Essential Duties

  • Diagnose and treat a wide range of sports-related injuries and illnesses, along with common illnesses and injuries affecting the student population.
  • Conduct pre-participation physical examinations and clear athletes for competition, in addition to general health screenings for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for optimal recovery and return-to-play timelines for athletes, as well as treatment plans for general student health needs.
  • Stay current on the latest advancements in both sports medicine and general student health practices through continuing education.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor athletic trainers and other healthcare professionals within the sports medicine specialty.
  • Oversee the quality and efficiency of care provided to student-athletes, while also ensuring high-quality care for the broader student health center population.
  • Participate in strategic planning and decision-making for both the sports medicine program and the overall student health services department.

Minimum Qualifications

Medical degree from an accredited allopathic or osteopathic school. Licensure to practice medicine in the State of Arizona. Completion of residency training in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education accredited residency training program or equivalent. Certified by an American Board of Medical Specialists board within 12 months of beginning employment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge and skill in the practice of medicine.
  • Evidence of DO, MD, or MBBS degree with board certification of fellowship training in Sports Medicine.
  • 1-3 years of experience practicing sports medicine in a university or professional athletic setting.
  • Strong clinical skills in musculoskeletal evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Experience with health care of the late adolescent and young adult population.
  • Experience and interest in health promotion and preventive health care.
  • Understanding of educational principles including continuing medical education requirements.
  • Experience with a leadership in an organizational role or project.
  • Ability to utilize electronic health records.
  • Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy and security rules.
  • Experience or training with medical care of the disabled.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Periodic travel involving local, regional, and national destinations requiring operation of a motorized vehicle which may also involve non-standard work hours.
