Job Description

Part-time position 22 hours over 3 consecutive days per week to assist with overseeing and coordinating operational activities in a research laboratory, ensuring that supplies are ordered, maintains inventories, and see equipment is functioning properly. Assist with design and execute laboratory assays according standard procedures using standard lab equipment, make observations, analyze, organize, report, and interpret findings.

Essential Duties

  • Assist with the design and execution of laboratory assays.
  • Perform experiments such as protein purification, protein aggregation assays, ELISAs, cloning, IHC, electrophoresis and immunoblotting, tissue homogenization and molecular extraction, and cell culture.
  • Familiar with microtube and microplates formats.
  • Responsible for analyzing and interpreting findings including statistical analysis.
  • Keep detailed, accurate and organized records of lab experimental protocols carried out daily and resultant data.
  • Prepare data and assist with writing manuscripts and grants. Inventory weekly to restock supplies for the laboratory.
  • Assist with scheduling student workers to cover the needs of the laboratory.
  • Train others for equipment usage and proper techniques.
  • Ensure that all safety guidelines are always strictly followed and maintain a clean and orderly environment.
  • Monitor and prepare reagents for the laboratory.
  • Organize and store all chemical substances, fluids and compressed gases according to safety instructions.
  • Record all data and results in specified forms (paper and electronic) with accuracy and responsibility.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Four years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in operating electrical and nonelectrical laboratory equipment and working with potentially dangerous substances (flammable liquids, infectious bacteria, biohazards etc.).
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of MS Office (especially Excel) and database tools. Ability to work autonomously and in teams.
  • Knowledge in biochemistry and/or neuroscience.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of laboratory operation.
  • Evidence of effective effective communication
  • Experience in coordinating the work of others.
  • Experience in transmission electron microscopy
  • Experience in confocal microscopy
  • Experience in dynamic light scattering

Working Environment

The working environment is a standard research laboratory in the ASU-Banner Neurodegenerative Disease Research Center, Biodesign Institute (NDRC) studying Alzheimer’s disease and other tauopathies. There may also be a requirement to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
