Job Description

The Learning Enterprise at ASU seeks a creative, highly motivated, self-directed, detail-oriented employee with strong written and verbal skills, to assist with grading and course management for a SOC 101- Introduction to Sociology Universal Learner Course (ULC), which is delivered remotely.

ASU/LE and the National Education Equity Lab are partnering to offer ASU college courses to Title 1 or Title 1 eligible high schools across the country. With your help, students from our nation’s most underserved communities can gain access to a rigorous college course and have the opportunity to earn pre-college credit and build college confidence. As an ASU and National Education Equity Teaching Assistant you will engage students in synchronous discussions, grade student work, drive student success, and be part of a national community working to advance education equity.

The SOC 101 Teaching Assistant(s) will provide support for the Fall C Session-Based course that will start on 8/20/24: (8/20/24-12/11/24). Support in future AY24 sessions may be possible.

This is a temporary position, with maximum hours of 19.5 per week. It may terminate when the work is no longer available. Continuation of role in sessions beyond class session for which hired for, is not guaranteed.

Salary Range

$16.00 - $20.00 per hour; DOE

Essential Duties

  • Onboarding and Training: If selected for this role, the SOC 101 Teaching Assistant(s) will be expected to participate in an initial 1-2 - hour training session.
  • Host weekly 45-minute synchronous discussion sessions via Zoom to enhance students’ engagement with course content, expose them to college-level seminar-style discussions, and help improve their analytical skills.
  • Grade and provide feedback on student work.
  • Participate in weekly course team check-ins to share learnings, successes, and challenges.
  • Answer course content questions, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Four years of progressively responsible instructional or subject work experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Experience in Prior teaching experience is a plus, with preference given to those who have experience working with high-school students.
  • Current ASU graduate student; who successfully completed SOC 101
  • Background or major in Sociology, or related field
  • Proficient in English

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • May be required to perform tasks in the field within and/or across University campuses.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
