Job Description

ASU TRIO Programs seeks a Management Intern for the Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program. Under the supervision of the Program Director and working alongside the Coordinators, the individual hired will implement recruitment and orientation sessions, academic/college preparatory workshops (both in-person and virtually), and oversee the testing component. The intern will also provide leadership and support to other student coordinators as well as assist in various other related duties such as coordinating with and supporting other ASU TRIO programs which provide participants with skills and the motivation necessary to enter and complete a program of secondary and postsecondary education. This position is a short-term position

The ideal candidate must work well in a fast‐paced, flexible environment, provide a high level of customer service to both the university and external communities, and make strong contributions both as an individual and as a team player.

Days and Schedule: Work location is primarily at the Tempe campus; however, incumbent will travel to off-campus events and other ASU campuses to perform work driving their own vehicle. This position is a part-time position from Monday thru Friday 8AM to 5PM, including some evenings and weekends. Flexible work arrangements are available in an alternative or hybrid schedule but will be based on the work and the needs of the university and department operations and pending leadership approval.

Essential Duties

  • Assists in planning and administration of service delivery.
    • Organize and conduct recruitment and orientation sessions (within virtual platform and in-person locations) to the target population (i.e., veterans currently not enrolled in college).
    • Organize, coordinate and conduct pertinent academic testing for all program participants as required; gather, evaluate, analyze and report testing data.
    • Working in transitioning veterans into college enrollment and activities (i.e., applying to colleges/universities, acquiring transcripts, investigating programs of interest).
    • Supervising supplemental instruction program that focuses on college preparedness and transition (e.g., developing timeline of content delivery, working with community partners for guest curriculum).
    • Plan, coordinate, and execute enrichment activities that will foster and encourage personal (i.e. intellectual, cultural, and social) development as well as help solidify the participants’ desire/pursuit of a postsecondary education (within virtual and in-person locations).
    • Drafting, testing, and disseminating program evaluations to program participants, analyzing that data, and writing reports and recommendations to the Program Director.
    • Maintains student database and prepares documentation, student communication, and reports as needed.
  • Supports social media engagement by creating promotional materials, posting status updates, and participating in digital networking.
  • Assist with supervision of student workers serving as student coordinators.
  • Attend all training, activities, and staff meetings.
  • Assist the Program Director in preparing proposals and reports as required by the U.S. Department of Education, Arizona State University, and other organizations.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.
  • Position requires work on weekends and evenings. Altered weekly work schedule, minimum of 20 hours per week.
  • General work schedule is:
    • At ASU: Mondays through Fridays, 8AM-5PM, some evenings, weekends and holidays.
    • Special events including field trips may take place throughout the year requiring one to work all day.
  • Primary work location is on the ASU Tempe campus, however work for this position may occur across ASU campuses (Downtown Phoenix, Polytechnic, Tempe, and West) as well as at approved community partner locations within Maricopa and Pinal counties, the program's target area. Reliable transportation is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of graduate student in a closely related field of study
  • Experience with TRIO, educational equity organizations and/or similar college preparatory programs.
  • Experience in working with U.S. military veterans and/or student veterans (i.e., adults who served in the U.S. Armed Forces).
  • Experience with diverse populations particularly those from low-income family backgrounds and first-generation college bound individuals to attend postsecondary institutions.
  • Knowledgeable on university administrative procedures including admission process.
  • Knowledge about financial aid, such as FAFSA and scholarships.
  • Knowledgeable with navigating through the VA system/agencies.
  • Experience implementing college readiness workshops.
  • Experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the program's target population.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills including use of MS Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Bookings, Teams, Publisher, Access), social media (e.g., Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, etc.), G Suite (e.g., Google Drive, Gmail, Hangouts, etc.), Canva, and ASU computer systems (e.g., Peoplesoft, Salesforce, Canvas, Zoom, Slack, Cisco Jabber, etc.).
  • Experience with digital technology devices like laptops, webcams, etc.
  • Evidence of effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with completing assigned projects in a timely manner and work well under priority deadlines.
  • Experience in planning, scheduling, and supervising the work of others.
  • Experience in customer service skills; self-starter, engaging and communicative in a virtual/online setting.

  • Professionally represent department/program.
  • Sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Work collaboratively across various departments within the University as well as with diverse populations and groups (within virtual platform and in-person locations) to achieve objectives.
  • Deliver presentations including teaching project participants and coordinating group activities.
  • Use computers and mobile technologies effectively – including inputting, reviewing and retrieving information, extended periods of viewing screen and using mouse and keyboard.
  • Use critical thinking to make decisions and/or analyze data.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Travel on buses to supervise participants on in-state/out-of-state field trips, when applicable.
  • Ability to lift 35 lbs.
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team setting.
