Job Description

The University Design Institute (UDI) partners with universities, higher education systems, philanthropic organizations and national governments to co-design new strategies for higher education. We are seeking a passionate and innovative Higher Education Design Facilitator to join our dynamic team at UDI. This key role will lead design and facilitation efforts across Arizona State University (ASU) and potentially external clients. By joining UDI, you will have the unique opportunity to shape the future of higher education at the nation’s largest public university. To date, UDI has led the co-design of over 20 enterprise-level design efforts. Two examples are the development of the Sidney Poitier New American Film School and the School of Technology for Public Health.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Serve as the design lead for multiple executive-level engagements that offer a systematic approach to design, resulting in innovative ideas and actionable outcomes.
  • Deliver design experiences that enhance creativity, ideation and collaboration; skillfully facilitate groups to arrive at innovative solutions that have the desired impact.
  • Develop new methodologies and tools to assess, improve and elevate UDI's design practice.

The ideal candidate is a(n):

  • Agile Partner: able to operate as a self-starter and function independently as the sole designer/facilitator OR as a member of the larger design, depending on the needs of the project.
  • Critical Thinker: Able to think operationally to ensure the smooth execution of the current facilitation project, while also maintaining a strategic focus on the project's broader objectives and UDI’s commitment to service excellence.
  • Effective Communicator: able to present to and engage with diverse audiences, including ASU executive-level leadership. Will also have a clear track record of building collaborative relationships and ability to assess their needs while actively managing and fostering those relationships.

The ideal candidate has:

  • Experience leading co-design engagements with diverse groups, tackling a variety of complex challenges, resulting in transformational outcomes. This may translate to design and facilitation of programs, workshops, and stakeholder convenings, including the ability to continuously adapt their approach as needed to ensure successful engagements.
  • Experience facilitating and having a design-thinking mindset with the ability to create inclusive, well-structured engagements to produce dynamic and transformative experiences.
  • Experience navigating a variety of cultures and structures across all levels of hierarchy.


This position is based on-site at UDI’s ASU SkySong offices, located in Scottsdale, Arizona. The role will report to the Director, Enterprise Design Initiatives.

Essential Duties

  • Design, facilitate and lead often complex, executive-level engagements within the ASU Enterprise, navigating cross-cultural dynamics and deeply passionate individuals internal and external to the ASU community.
  • Establish and foster trust among clients, participants and other personnel to create safe and constructive spaces for deep conversations and guide groups towards alignment and solutions.
  • Create engaging processes using a wide variety of strategic planning, design thinking and other innovation frameworks across projects.
  • Facilitate co-design processes, workshops, and other types of events with creativity, enthusiasm and attention to detail.
  • Assess client needs and adapt the approach, the design, the facilitation, and the agenda to ensure successful engagement that align with the client goals.
  • Manage a complex network of relationships, including: needs, goals and expectations of individuals, while holding to UDI’s core values and design principles.
  • Synthesize ideas into well-structured and actionable products that support successful implementation of solutions.
  • Develop new design methodologies, frameworks and tools to support client needs and advance UDI’s design practice.
  • Build and implement key performance indicators to measure the success and impact of engagements as well as evaluation and feedback collection processes to allow for continual improvement.
  • Educate self and others of current industry trends, competitive landscape and emerging ideas in design and facilitation to advance innovative solutions for UDI’s clients.
  • Travel domestically and internationally in support of UDI projects, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters degree in design, higher education administration, non-profit management, communication, organizational behavior or management, AND five (5) years of experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in developing co-design methodologies and tools.
  • Demonstrated experience working across multiple stakeholders, levels of organizational structure, sectors and geographical regions, with deep experience in higher education institutions, systems, and personnel.
  • Demonstrated experience in thematic areas relevant to higher education, including social design, governance models, leadership, financing models, digital transformation, policy, or related domains.
  • Demonstrated certifications, credentials, training, or education experience in co-design, facilitation, coaching, or other relevant design work.
  • Demonstrated experience in working within higher education to advance transformation.
  • Demonstrated experience with working across cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience working with c-suite and executive level individuals or groups.
  • Understanding of emerging trends in higher education and how these impact transformation engagements.

Working Environment

  • This position is based on-site at UDI’s ASU SkySong offices, located in Scottsdale, Arizona.
  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • May be required to perform tasks in the field within and/or across University campuses.
