Job Description
The School of Life Sciences (SOLS) Teaching and Learning Center (TLC), at the ASU Tempe campus, is seeking a talented, service-oriented Instructional Design Associate to support instructors with Canvas and learning technologies. Applicants should be motivated to elevate and optimize teaching and learning experiences with the use of effective and innovative technologies.
TLC guides faculty in developing and teaching immersion on-campus and online courses, incorporating research-based teaching practices, and applying industry-recognized instructional design and learning technology quality standards. The TLC team facilitates the promotion of educational technology and digital tools to enhance course delivery effectiveness and efficiency at scale while improving student retention and outcomes.
The instructional designer associate will champion our Canvas LMS and other learning technologies, working with faculty to support efficient course delivery. The ideal candidate is a proactive, collaborative Canvas expert who is skilled in implementing various digital learning tools in an educational setting. Under general direction, the instructional designer associate will assist instructional designers, faculty, and/or other subject matter experts in the design and development of learning materials using multiple instructional technologies and applying best practices in teaching and learning.
This job is located on ASU’s Tempe campus. After a successful onboarding and training period, there may be options for some remote work arrangements, but an in-person presence in the office is expected on a regular basis to support collaboration with faculty and colleagues.

Essential Duties
- Works collaboratively in a team environment to support School of Life Sciences immersion and online programs and courses.
- Prioritizes competing demands to meet established timelines and assist with multiple projects and service requests as needed.
- Supports and maintains learning technologies in online, immersion on-campus, and hybrid courses with an emphasis on the digital learning tools that integrate with Canvas.
- Applies expertise in instructional technology systems and familiarity with instructional design principles to assist instructional designers and faculty with implementing learning technologies.
- Provides instructional technology and Canvas support to faculty such as identifying and troubleshooting errors and problems with Canvas and learning tools, and collaborating with Enterprise Technology to facilitate timely resolutions or escalating appropriately.
- Applies professional demeanor and uses various communication methods (e.g., email, in-person consultations, video tutorials), promptly responds to faculty inquiries, and delivers timely, pedagogically sound guidance and support for Canvas and learning technologies.
- Utilizes and recommends effective and creative uses of technology to enhance instruction including content authoring tools, document creation applications, presentation tools, and other technology resources to develop custom products.
- Under the direction of instructional designers/managers, assists with quality assurance, editing, and implementing recommended changes to improve learning.
- Develops training materials, communications, and documentation including online tutorials and other multimedia materials to assist faculty with instructional technology, LMS, and instructional support issues.
- Seeks and maintains current knowledge of emerging educational technologies.
- Assumes or coordinates other duties or projects as assigned or directed.
- Knowledge of instructional design and pedagogical approaches, practices, and tools for diverse audiences/environments.
- Skill in using a variety of industry-leading technologies and products for the development of content, presentations, web pages, web applications, and tutorials.
- Skill in using Canvas learning management system.
- Skill in troubleshooting computer and web technology issues on common platforms.
- Skill in effective organization and time management in an environment with multiple priorities and short deadlines.
- Skill in communication.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field. One (1) year of experience providing educational technology development services, or formal or informal education. Or, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
- Evidence of effective communication skills
- Experience with Salesforce, Google Workspace, and/or web development and management tools such as Drupal
- Experience in building and maintaining effective working relationships with faculty, administrators, and staff
- Experience working in an educational setting (preferably higher education)
- Experience in designing, developing, implementing, and/or revising online courses and course materials in Canvas or other LMS
- Experience in designing and developing job aids, online tutorials, lectures, and other multimedia content
- Experience in researching and resolving technology issues with particular emphasis on digital learning tools and Canvas and/or other LMS
- Evidence of being versed in Universal Design for Learning and experience in creating content in alternative formats for people with disabilities
Working Environment
- Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, and walking.
- Bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting up to 20 pounds.
- Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties.
- Regular review of completed tasks.
- Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to the resolution of conflicts.
- Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, calculator, copier, telephone, and associated computer/technology peripherals.
