Job Description

The Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University seeks an energetic, ambitious, team-oriented individual for the Communications Specialist role. The strategic Marketing and Communications team at ASU Law is committed to building, generating and launching strategic plans to significantly increase revenue, enrollment and brand awareness. Our energetic team of 10 individuals brings specialized talents and diverse experiences, enhancing our ability to create impactful and innovative strategies to advance the college’s goals. As part of the marketing and communications team at ASU Law, this position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the curation of content for publication on ASU News, ASU Law’s Newsroom website and social media; writing, editing and creating content, including stories, announcements/press releases and website copy; implementation of internal and external communications plans; develop media reporting and tracking efforts; strategize and conduct media outreach; create various internal and external newsletters; craft strategic award nominations; proactively seek positive public relations opportunities.

One overarching goal of the marketing and communications team is to bridge the gap between the law school and the public by engaging internal and external stakeholders in trending legal topics and their potential implications on society. The successful candidate will work independently and collaboratively to consistently deliver high-quality workmanship on time. This role reports to the law school’s assistant director of communications and is located at the Arizona State University downtown Phoenix campus.

Essential Duties

  • Advances ASU Law’s priorities and department objectives of student recruitment, positive reputation, strategic plan promotion and fostering fruitful partnerships through communications.
  • Plans, develops, and writes creative, high-quality communications for graduate-level college audiences (e.g., faculty, staff, students, donors, prospective students, and the general public) using multiple digital and print communications mediums (e.g. email, print, web, social media).
  • Serve as an in-house reporter for the college to seek stories and craft compelling articles. Provide ideas and proactively conduct outreach to faculty, administration, students and alumni to tell their stories.
  • Write articles, announcements/press releases, web copy, newsletters and award nominations.
  • Think forwardly and proactively seek ambitious media placements, articles and public relations opportunities.
  • Proactively conduct media outreach for strategic placements. Build and maintain a media contact list. Respond to media requests and coordinate interviews with leadership, faculty and staff. Coordinate and collaborate with ASU’s media relations office. Advise college leadership on public relations opportunities that support strategic initiatives. Develop new and maintain current relationships for ASU Law with media organizations. Assist reporters and editors in their efforts to understand ASU Law’s mission and activities. Track and flag media opportunities and coverage; produce and submit coverage reports.
  • Coordinate regular newsletters, including the monthly The LENS, Updates from the Dean’s Office and Weekly Media Reports. Ensure the newsletters are reviewed and sent on time. Coordinate with the email marketing coordinator to build and send newsletters.
  • Nominate ASU Law and appropriate faculty and staff for relevant awards that will help amplify the school’s expertise and excellence.
  • Helps maintain an editorial calendar and assists with social media when needed. Attends events to conduct real-time for story creations and/or social media promotion as necessary. Add media placements and published content to the social media calendar and communicate placements with social media manager. Monitor social media to stay abreast of news and current events.
  • Upload articles and announcements to the website using basic html.
  • Engages with marketing and communications representatives across ASU academic and business units to source content.
  • Contributes to the development and execution communications plan and strategies.
  • Work together with other marcomm team members to ensure success of various projects.
  • Promote a culture of innovation, empowerment and teamwork.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, Marketing, Education or a related field AND three (3) years of related work experience in the development of comprehensive and creative communication; OR seven (7) years of related work experience; OR Any equivalent combination of experience and or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved. Certificates from recognized programs that verify mastery of tools and techniques relevant to the assignment may substitute for up to six (6) months of experience.

  • Skilled in both verbal and written communication with experience in writing, editing and storytelling.

  • Experience in being an organized problem solver who can take initiative to effectively manage complex and sometimes competing situations and set priorities while being flexible.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques used in communications strategies
  • Knowledge of the principles, standards and practices of project management.
  • Knowledge of internet-based social networking formats, audiences, and usage standards.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Experience in organization and attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Experience in maintaining a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility to ASU Law and the university.
  • Ability to work in an environment subject to quickly changing priorities and tight deadlines.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Experience working in a higher education and/or executive environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with Microsoft Office suite (or equivalent) and commonly used web browsers.
  • Physical presence at the workplace is an essential function or requirement of this job.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the goals of the department.

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
