Job Description

Position works under the direction of the Assistant Manager of Athletic Grounds. Maintains athletic grounds and participates in all types of grounds maintenance activities and athletic events. Ensures that goals and objectives are met with strict adherence to NCAA and Big 12 rules and regulations as well as policies and procedures of the department, the University, and the Arizona Board of Regents.

Essential Duties

  • Maintains athletic fields and facilities and landscaping e.g. plants, remove debris, waters; sprays for weeds and insects; operates and maintains landscaping tools and equipment; paints athletic fields; performs maintenance, and installs/removes outdoor signage.
  • Plants shrubs, trees, and flowers; prunes trees and shrubs.
  • Removes debris from stairs and walks, rakes leaves, and mows lawns.
  • Picks up litter and empty outdoor trash/recycling cans.
  • Waters trees, shrubs and lawns and performs irrigation activities.
  • Sprays for weeds and insects using unrestricted chemicals as required.
  • Operates large power lawn mowers and tractors, small engine edgers, string trimmers, and sod cutters, a variety of hand tools, and large vehicles associated with ground maintenance and landscaping activities.
  • Operates utility vehicles, pick-up trucks, flat-rack trucks and dump trucks for hauling purposes and for trash and debris removal.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repair on equipment and tools as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Any experience which provides knowledge, skills and ability to perform the work. Employee may be required to possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of proper operation, use and care of equipment, tools and procedures of grounds maintenance and care.
  • Knowledge of athletic field line and logo marking.
  • Knowledge of techniques of planting and maintaining plants, trees and shrubs suited to the area location.
  • Knowledge of fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides used in grounds care and gardening.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods and practices used to properly care for and maintain landscape. areas, plants, flowers, shrubs, trees, succulents and cacti.
  • Knowledge of proper safety precautions/procedures associated with application of various chemical treatments and equipment.
  • Knowledge of proper body mechanics and lifting procedures/methods.
  • Knowledge of proper calculations used to measure/mix/prepare chemical treatments.
  • Experience in operating grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to read and follow directions.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.

Working Environment

  • Activities regularly require long periods of exposure to external elements indigenous to a desert environment, weather, potential exposure to venomous insects, insecticides, herbicides and fertilizers.
  • Regularly required to work nights and/or weekends.
  • Regularly required to operate a variety of landscaping equipment, tools and machines requiring extended periods of walking over uneven and occasionally rocky surfaces, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and pushing objects of varying weights up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Regular use of mowers, trimmers, edgers, shears, spreaders, hoses, hand and power tools/machines; may regularly operate a motor vehicle as assigned.
  • This position receives regular review of daily work tasks to ensure adherence with established standards for quality, aesthetics, and quantity.
