Fire Safety Specialist

Job Description

Plans, organizes and coordinates the fire safety and prevention inspections, hazardous materials and processes, safety, compliance and monitoring activities to ensure the safety of the university community. This includes providing consultation and guidance, conducting audits and facility inspections, conducting training, data management and addressing issues and suggesting remediation steps or improvements. Works closely with Fire Safety Partners, and Fire Prevention Officer serves as an advisor in fire safety and fire prevention duties.

Essential Duties

  • Conducts existing building inspections at lower and moderate risk buildings to audit, provide consultation to ensure fire and life safety and compliance with federal, state, local regulations, codes, and university requirements.
  • Reviews construction plans for tenant improvements that are smaller project scope to ensure compliance with fire and life safety regulatory requirements, codes and standards to assure compliance prior to occupancy.
  • Reviews and permits lower scale special events for operational permitting to ensure compliance with fire and life safety regulations and code requirements.
  • Utilizes checklists and identifies and informs the team of problems with the fire and life safety regulations and code requirements.
  • Develops and implements fire safety and fire prevention programs and sustainability activities to support university goals.
  • Reviews, interprets and evaluates compliance activities and policies to ensure safety and recommends and/or implements required safety changes.
  • Manages relationship with regulatory agencies to stay abreast of changes, manage compliance, and ensure facility and personnel safety.
  • Maintains safety databases using various information systems or user-specific software.
  • Serves as a member of the department emergency response team and participates in emergency drills and actual emergencies.
  • Stays abreast of current and proposed changes in federal, state and industry regulations and requirements.
  • Assists with fire safety and fire prevention education programs.
  • Drives Arizona State University leased, owned or rented vehicles and carts to various ASU locations to perform work.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with the main emphasis on Fire or Public Administration or related field appropriate to the area of assignment and; two (2) years of fire and building code compliance experience; OR six (6) years of any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved,Current nationally recognized certifications as a Fire Inspector level I.Valid Arizona State Driver’s License within 90 days of start date.

Desired Qualifications

  • Willing to be endorsed by ASU to be appointed Fire Inspector by the AZ department of forestry and fire management with NFPA or ICC Certifications for Fire Extinguisher Technician, Fire Plans Examiner, Fire Inspector II. FEMA - ICS 300/400 Level Courses.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices pertaining to Fire Protection/Prevention and Environmental Health and Safety.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, local, environmental, fire and safety laws and regulations and compliance strategies, to include International Code Council code books, National Fire Protections Association standards, and Arizona Revised Statutes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of University and Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) policies and procedures.
  • National Recognized Fire Inspector 1 Certification (e.g. ICC / NFPA / Pro Board).
  • Hands on experience in existing fire safety inspections through Fire Prevention.
  • Experience in Operational Permitting as part of Fire Prevention (Special Event Permitting).
  • Experience in Construction Plans Review and Permitting through Fire Prevention.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Position requires working in various construction and renovation sites involving rough terrain, limited access using stairs or ladders to access above grade and below grade level areas to include trenches and confined spaces in order to inspect, test and certify fire and life safety related systems.
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, loud noises, and construction processes on work sites.
  • Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.
