Director
Job Description
The ASEAN Center at Arizona State University’s Washington, DC Campus is seeking a Director to collaborate closely with the ASU Associate Vice Provost, SE Asia and U.S. Department of State partner to establish an annual program agenda for research, speaking series, teaching, and networking opportunities for the ASEAN Center. The coordination and design of these activities will involve bringing together business, government, and thought leaders to co-design prioritized programs aligning to the Center’s core objectives. This will also include seeking sponsors to fund the administration of some of these programs.
At the 10th annual U.S.-ASEAN Summit in Phnom Penh, President Biden and ASEAN leaders elevated U.S.-ASEAN relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP). The CSP expanded cooperation in existing dialogue tracks in foreign affairs, economics, and defense, and established five new high-level dialogue processes on health, transportation, women’s empowerment, environment and climate, and energy. High-level travel and engagement from several Cabinet members preceding the summit supported this commitment.
To ensure this elevated partnership reaches its full potential, the leaders of ASEAN and the United States announced in December 2023, through a public-private partnership, the creation of an ASEAN Center at Arizona State University’s Washington, DC Campus. The ASEAN Center will serve as a key hub for ASEAN’s engagement with the United States. Subject to consultations between ASEAN and the United States, the Center’s future activities may include:
Facilitating official U.S.-ASEAN engagements, and building deeper habits of cooperation between ASEAN and the full range of U.S. departments and agencies;
- Enhancing connectivity between ASEAN and the U.S. private sector, with particular attention to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as civil society;
- Arranging cultural and educational activities aimed at strengthening ties among the combined one billion people of the United States and ASEAN;
- Conducting research to support and elevate the substantive work of the U.S.-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership; and
- Facilitating capacity-building programs that advance the shared objectives and vision of the United States and ASEAN.
