This senior leadership role, guided by the Associate Vice Provost of Data Strategy, Analysis and Planning, provides strategic direction, oversight, and cross-enterprise, collaborative orchestration to evolve and optimize university assets, including advanced analytics, supporting data-driven decision-making and responsible data practices. This director will foster a culture of innovation, inclusivity, and continuous learning to ensure ASU's data capabilities remain cutting-edge while safeguarding privacy and upholding the ASU Charter.

Essential Duties

  • Working across multiple units within the Office of the Provost and throughout the enterprises, cultivate and advance a robust vision for the continuous evolution of Academic Enterprise data assets (repositories, datasets, dashboards, reports and models) to support academic leadership in monitoring key university metrics and progress to goals.
  • Advance and mature ASU data governance and privacy program, working with Enterprise Technology to appropriately manage university data assets, supporting development, implementation and understanding of internal and external data sharing, data governance and data privacy policies and practices.
  • Partner with Enterprise Technology and ASU data community and data stewards to evolve privacy and appropriate use guidelines extending beyond compliance into all aspects of data usage, championing ethical data practices and bias mitigation techniques, ensuring that data-driven insights are produced and utilized responsibly.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and trends, such as generative AI, machine learning, predictive analytics, and data-capability maturity models, assessing their potential to enhance data strategy and decision-making processes and capabilities within the Academic Enterprise.
  • Explore and experiment with innovative data technologies to identify opportunities for automation, data synthesis, and advanced analytics, fostering a culture of innovation, transparency and high quality data-driven insights.
  • Support data-driven decision making through the collection and reporting of information to measure operational performance and strategic outcomes, through reports, dashboards, data enrichment, and strategic partnerships with data-generating units.
  • Collaborate on evolving systems and processes to ensure the information needs of Academic Enterprise colleges, departments and both academic and non-academic units are addressed, working with technologists, analysts and other key stakeholders to ensure integrity and timeliness of data availability.
  • Co-develop strategic roadmaps with both Provost office leadership and decentralized cadre of analysts, researchers, technologists and business intelligence experts to optimize the efficiency and efficacy of the suite of data assets serving the Academic Enterprise mission and ASU charter.
  • Establish key partnerships and collegial relationships with trans-enterprise leadership and data teams in Learning Enterprise, Knowledge Enterprise, Enterprise Planning, Enterprise Technology, EdPlus, Educational Outreach and Student Services as well as Academic Enterprise academic and non-academic units in order to accelerate the data capabilities of the ASU Public Enterprise writ large.
  • Work with technology partners and stakeholders to design data assets and a business intelligence infrastructure with scalability and sustainability in mind, anticipating the changing needs of the Academic Enterprise, and adapting quickly to evolving priorities and capabilities at the forefront of data-driven decision-making.
  • Encourage and evolve training and professional development opportunities to stay current with the latest data technologies, industry trends, and best practices, fostering a culture of continuous learning within the ASU data community.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field AND ten (10) years of related experience which includes five (5) years of management/supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the ASU Academic Enterprise and deep commitment to ASU Charter.
  • Conversant and experienced with business intelligence tools (Tableau, Alteryx, PowerBI, etc.)
  • Familiar with cloud data technologies (AWS Redshift, AWS S3, Azure SQL, etc.)
  • Experience learning and leveraging new data and emergent technologies.
  • Experience in leading organizational improvement, creating technical and process efficiencies, appropriate governance, and quality assurance within a multi-layered business intelligence ecosystem.
  • Aptitude for identifying and shepherding institutional culture, process and technical change.

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and travel moderate distances to perform work. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
