Job Description

The School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University seeks to hire a qualified NAGPRA Project Lead to manage, under the guidance of the Postdoctoral Research Scholar and Assistant Director of Repatriation in the Center for Archaeology and Society Repository, tasks associated with curation and repatriation under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) for Tonto National Forest (TNF) collections. The NAGPRA Project lead will oversee the locating, documenting, and preparing of TNF NAGPRA collections. Additional duties include conducting background research to determine archaeological and cultural context through archival documents, and assisting with the creation of relevant documents for curatorial management and NAGPRA compliance.

To prepare these collections in accordance with Center for Archaeology and Society Repository processes, relevant collections must be located, documented, assigned artifact types for cultural affiliation, cataloged according to contemporary archaeological and museum collection management standards and best practices, assessed for removal provenience and context, and the collection information entered into relevant databases.

Essential Duties

  • Oversees and assists with the transformation of record inventory data.

  • Oversees the locating and transport of archaeological objects for inventory.

  • Identifies and matches potential NAGPRA objects with information in field notes, collections databases, and other archival records.

  • Organize site materials (including archaeological collections and associated documents).

  • Prepare reports (both preliminary and final) to confirm/update existing Notices of Inventory Completion/Notices of Intent to Repatriate and document transfer.

  • Supervise funerary object documentation activities of student interns and workers

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three (3) years of related experience; OR, Seven (7) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the archaeology and material culture, history, and ethnography of the American Southwest
  • Evidence of a Bachelor’s degree with a focus in archaeology, anthropology, or museum studies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of appropriate handling of curated archaeological collections
  • Experience with archival research
  • Supervisory experience with students
  • Experience in using organizational and project management skills
  • Evidence of effective communication skills
  • Experience working independently and collaboratively in a team

Working Environment

  • Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office or large collections room setting (for in-person), subject to some extended periods of sitting or standing.
  • Must have visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of a desktop computer.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach and lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Works from general instructions on standard job duties and specific directions/instructions on new assignments.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate to perform essential functions as well as an ability to use a telephone, computer (monitor, keyboard, and mouse), scanner, printer, fax, and copy machine.
