Job Description

Performs professional accounting activities and data analysis to fulfill university initiatives and projects. This position will support upper management for specialized and complex assignments requiring competent knowledge of accounting principles and practices. Qualified candidate will possess applicable accounting experience, query management experience and the ability to analyze and interpret data for trends or discrepancies.

A successful candidate, not presently employed within Financial Services, will be paid a signing bonus of $750 and a $1,250 bonus after completing six months of employment with the department.

Essential Duties

  • Provides specialized or general calculations and analysis support in various accounting functions.
  • Recommends alternatives to management when accounting data indicates trends or situations requiring action to betaken beyond scope of responsibilities.
  • Establishes or revises procedures or operating policies of assigned functions and participates in development and implementation of new or revised accounting systems.
  • Reviews accounting and reporting systems, procedures and completed assignments of other staff to ensure compliance with university or outside agency regulations.
  • Develops and prepares reporting based on query results from University Data Warehouse tables.
  • Reviews and controls account and records to ensure accuracy, proper documentation, and compliance with all pertinent procedures and regulations.
  • Prepares complex journal entries and records composite entries.
  • Develops a strong understanding of the university accounting system to research discrepancies and perform complex reconciliations.
  • Adjusts to changing needs of university operations or need to provide specialized or individualized reports.
  • Researches, analyzes and uses independent judgment in a variety of daily and non-routine decisions affecting assigned function.
  • Researches and evaluates new or changed accounting principles and practices.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field AND two (2) years of professional accounting experience; OR, six (6) years professional accounting experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in preparing detailed and complex reports utilizing data warehouse/storage and retrieval systems such as Microsoft access or other query software.
  • Knowledge of Peoplesoft or other similar student account information system with specific query and reporting experience.
  • Experience with Workday Accounting system or other on-line accounting systems.
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in a university setting and/or familiarity with federal regulations pertaining to student information and tuition reporting requirements.
  • Experience in a high volume customer service environment.

Working Environment

  • Work in an office setting and use office equipment (i.e. computers, printers, copiers, calculators, telephones).
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time, travel moderate distances to perform work.
  • Communicate to perform essential duties.
  • Read-interpret written and oral instructions/directions.
  • May require lifting of items weighing up to 25 lbs.

Student Business Services provides accounting functions in the areas of: Student Accounts, Cashiering Services, Collections, Tuition Assessment, Third Party Billing and Treasury Management.
