Job Description

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (TCLAS) seeks an experienced Facilities Project Manager to develop project solutions that accommodate growth and address The College's research and teaching objectives. The Facilities Project Manager will be responsible for overseeing and managing small to mid-size projects related to the planning, construction, and renovation of research labs, office areas, instructional spaces, and more. This position requires strong knowledge of project management principles and familiarity with change management practices and techniques needed to successfully deliver projects.

The Facilities Project Manager will work with the Associate Dean of Facilities, The College planning team, and project stakeholders to plan, direct, organize and coordinate project execution in accordance with defined requirements. The Facilities Project Manager will work within a planning framework defined by colleagues in other colleges, the Office of Enterprise Planning, Knowledge Enterprise, and Facilities Development and Management.

The Facilities Project Manager will be expected to work primarily onsite at the ASU Tempe campus, with some flexibility to work remotely and with the opportunity to obtain a hybrid work arrangement upon completion of the training period.

Essential Duties

  • Monitor space assignments to track opportunities and accommodate changing needs within The College.
  • Develop architectural programs for research, instructional, and office space.
  • Develop comprehensive project plans that outline the scope, goals, timeline, budget, and resources required for facility-related projects.
  • Develop space needs assessments for proposed TCLAS occupants in various locations
  • Oversee design and implementation of small to mid-size facility renovations within TCLAS.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, such as department and school heads, and external stakeholders, such as architects, contractors, and vendors, to ensure effective communication and coordination throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Recommend and implement facility changes addressing life safety concerns and space management improvements, including upgrades to space shared between TCLAS units.
  • Support building systems and operational requirements for TCLAS, including ISAAC doors, space management database, maintenance and space requests.
  • Monitor project progress and timeline to anticipate potential risks to project success and recommend intervention actions to avoid costly mistakes and delays.
  • Monitor projects to ensure that the project team meets the objectives, schedule, budget, and programming goals defined early in the planning process.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and 5 years related experience; 1 of which are in project management, or any equivalent combination of experience and /or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to create, develop, and implement facility project planning solutions in a self-directed environment.
  • Experience in engineering and/or quantitative training to assess needs and develop facility programs.
  • Demonstrated track record of working in teams assembled for specific design and construction projects.
  • Familiarity with both the public and private sector project environment.
  • Experience with research laboratory and academic facilities projects.
  • Understanding of research facility performance requirements and familiarity with research equipment.
  • Experience and formal training leading to a demonstrated understanding of building systems, construction, materials, and methods.
  • Experience with design and construction estimating, budgeting, and scheduling.
  • Knowledge of building codes and accepted standards of design and construction practice.
  • Experience using technology tools commonly used in facilities project settings, such as AutoCAD, scheduling systems, and communication tools such as Blue Beam.
  • Knowledge of project management principles, change management practices, and techniques needed for project delivery.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of higher education environments.


Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in a variety of internal and external settings.
  • Most work activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Activities will require traveling to various locations within ASU Tempe campus and will also require periodic trips to other ASU campuses.
  • Field trips, construction inspections, and other activities may require walking for long periods of time, walking on uneven surfaces, temporary exposure to extreme temperatures, climbing stairs, climbing ladders, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, crouching, stretching, climbing, crawling, manipulating ladders and/or lifting moderate amounts of weight.
  • Field trips and inspections may also include exposure to central plant equipment and systems in a loud environment; dirty environment with inadequate lighting, extreme noise, confined spaces (e.g., tunnels, vaults), and restricted movement.
  • Field trips and inspections may involve exposure to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and equipment, which will require safety precautions and/or specific processes to be followed and may include the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
