The Assistant Director for Student Engagement and Retention is a vital leadership role within Barrett West Valley. The position is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing programs and strategies that enhance student engagement, retention, and overall success. This role involves overseeing student programming, supervising staff, fostering community development, and building strategic collaborations across the university. This role is ideal for a dedicated professional passionate about student engagement and success. The Assistant Director will report to the Associate Dean for the West Valley campus.

Essential Duties
- Strategic Planning and Collaboration:
- Serve as a Senior Staff member and primary liaison between Barrett West Valley and other university departments.
- Create strategies and develop unique programs to enhance student engagement and retention.
- Participate in relevant committees and collaborate with university partners to execute Barrett and ASU initiatives.
- Program Development and Implementation:
- Design and implement student programming for both on- and off-campus students, including wellness, academic, community service, social, cultural, diversity, and college signature programs.
- Plan and execute campus-specific camps and orientation programs for new students.
- Contribute content to the college website and social media outlets to promote student engagement opportunities.
- Supervision and Leadership:
- Supervise, advise, and train West Valley Barrett Peer Academic Leaders (PALs) and engagement/retention assistants.
- Manage staff and oversee performance, including work allocation, training, evaluation, and motivation.
- Provide guidance to students, parents, and staff in navigating Student Services resources.
- Mentor and develop student leaders, fostering leadership and community-building skills.
- Community Building and Residential Life:
- Coordinate with housing partners to enhance the residential community and foster a strong community identity.
- Continue to enhance the cohesion and identity of the residential community through targeted initiatives.
- Budget Management:
- Manage program budgets.
- Reporting and Administrative Duties:
- Provide regular reports and updates to leadership on program effectiveness, student engagement, and other relevant metrics.
- Maintain relationships with external community groups and organizations to support student engagement initiatives.
- Participate in signature college events, such as Homecoming and Family Weekend.
- Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND six (6) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Ten (10) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

- Evidence of a Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience in student engagement, retention, or a related area within higher education.
- Experience in program development, staff supervision, and student leadership development.
- Knowledge of residential life, student services, and student development.
- Evidence of effective interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse campus partners and external stakeholders.
- Experience managing budgets and using data to drive program decisions.
- Familiarity with marketing and promotional strategies for student engagement.
- Experience working in a university honors college setting.
- Knowledge of ASU’s organizational structure and student support services.
- Experience with residential life programming and community building.
- Experience in using problem-solving skills.
- Ability to navigate complex student situations
Working Environment
Work Environment:
The Assistant Director for Student Engagement and Retention will work primarily in an office setting on the West Valley campus of Arizona State University (ASU). This role requires frequent interaction with students, staff, faculty, and university partners. The work environment is dynamic, requiring flexibility to adapt to changing needs and priorities.
Hours:
This position typically requires a standard 40-hour workweek, but it may also involve evening and weekend hours, especially during peak periods such as orientation, special events, and major programming activities. Flexibility in scheduling is essential to meet the demands of student engagement and retention efforts.
Physical Demands:
The role may require light physical activity, including setting up for events, moving materials, and occasionally traveling between different campus locations. The position involves prolonged periods of sitting, working on a computer, and attending meetings.
Travel:
Occasional travel between ASU campuses or to off-campus sites may be required for meetings, collaborations, or events.
Collaboration:
The Assistant Director will collaborate with various campus departments, including housing, student government, academic services, and external community partners, requiring strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
Student Interaction:
Regular and meaningful interaction with students is a core component of the role. The Assistant Director should be comfortable working with a diverse student population, including providing guidance, support, and mentorship.
Technology Use:
The position requires the use of various software programs and platforms for communication, reporting, event planning, and content creation. Familiarity with these tools or a willingness to learn is essential.
