Job Description
Works with the Fire Marshal and Assistant Fire Marshal directly to oversee the existing building inspection program along with tracking of violations and corrections to reports. Manages the Fire Extinguisher service and maintenance program. A working supervisory role which performs existing building inspections, reviews construction plans, permits construction projects, and issues operational permits for special events while training staff on how to improve inspection processes and stay compliant with internal deadlines and tracking of information within internal databases.

Essential Duties
- Provides scheduled inspections of university owned buildings and properties to ensure fire safety and compliance with federal, state, local regulations, codes, and university requirements.
- Works directly for the Fire Marshal and Assistant Fire Marshal to oversee the existing building inspection program to ensure compliance with periodic inspections and tracking of information.
- Provides fire safety construction plans review for new construction, tenant improvements, and deferred submittals including but not limited to fire alarm systems, automatic sprinkler systems, alternative fire extinguishing systems, etc.
- Provides on-site construction inspections to approve fire safety systems and finalize buildings to be occupied. Reviews special event requests and issues operational permits, fire safety guidelines as required to ensure compliance with fire and life safety regulations and code requirements.
- Responds to emergency calls related to fire and life safety providing investigations and inspections.
- Oversees the service and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers throughout the University to ensure compliance with codes and standards, assigns trouble calls for service and maintenance and tracks the budget and maintenance for portable fire extinguisher program.
- Trains staff to maintain internal inspection database with up to date fire and life safety information on buildings.
- Communicates with the ASU community through planning meetings and committees on safety-related matters.
- Reviews, interprets and evaluates compliance activities and policies to ensure safety and recommends and/or implements required safety changes.
- Maintains relationships with regulatory agencies to stay abreast of changes, manage compliance, and ensure facility and personnel safety.
- Ensures incoming and outgoing hazardous materials inventories are properly maintained in regards to the maximum allowable quantities per control areas.
- Establishes procedures and trains other employees in how to manage data.
- Serves as a member of the department emergency response team and participates in fire and evacuation drills and actual emergencies to include fire, smoke, and other fire safety related emergencies.
- Develops fire safety and prevention education programs as it relates to the ASU community.
Minimum Qualifications
Associates degree in Fire Administration, Public Administration, Individualized Programs with main emphasis on Fire or Public Administration or related field appropriate to the area of assignment and at least four (4) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Certification as Fire Inspector I. Fire Inspector II, and Fire Plans Examiner (or the ability to achieve these certification within 12 months of hire). Valid Arizona State Drivers License within 90 days of start date. Endorsement by ASU to be appointed Fire Inspector by the AZ department of forestry and fire management.
Desired Qualifications
- Recognized Certifications for Arson Investigator, Fire Extinguisher Technician, Certified Fire Marshal, ICS 300, and 400.
- Experience working in fire prevention.
- Experience in basic fire safety and inspection procedures.
- Evidence of a current nationally recognized certification as a Fire Inspector Level 1
- Knowledge of principles and practices pertaining to fire safety and prevention, and Environmental Health and Safety. Knowledge of federal, state, local, environmental, fire and safety laws and regulations and compliance strategies, to include International Code Council code compliance, National Fire Protections Association standards, and Arizona Revised Statutes.
- Knowledge of University and Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of risk management methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of the principles of exemplary customer service demonstrated through actively listening, acknowledging, and responding to every inquiry; taking ownership and resolving each concern or problem as appropriate; exhibiting professionalism and expertise in every interaction and engaging in professional development to meet expectations for service excellence.

Working Environment
- Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse;
- Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
- Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
- Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
- Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
- Position requires working in various buildings, properties and construction sites involving rough terrain, limited access using stairs or ladders to access above grade and below grade level areas to include confined spaces in order to inspect and verify fire and life safety related system compliance.
- Understands operating principles and applications of emergency response equipment and is capable of using equipment in the field during emergencies or while covering for staff that may be absent.
- Ability to lift and transport up to 50 pounds.
