Job Description

The Capital Programs Management Group (CPMG), Office of the University Architect (OUA), and FM Knowledge Enterprise Facilities Services (KEFS), under the umbrella of Facilities Development and Management (FDM), seek an Architect Principal to perform work of highly specialized complexity in semiconductor research and engineering facilities. This position plays a critical role in the design, operation, and maintenance of complex systems, ensuring the availability, reliability, and capacity of the mechanical systems supporting cleanrooms, labs, and offices at Macro Technology Works (MTW). Located in the ASU Research Park in Southeastern Tempe, MTW is an advanced semiconductor research facility that provides ASU researchers, private industry researchers, partner companies, and start-up operations with office, lab, and cleanroom space to advance semiconductor-related processes, from basic material research to advanced semiconductor processing.

The Architect Principal will conduct architectural and engineering plan reviews to ensure compliance with local building codes and semiconductor/cleanroom industry best practices. This role involves performing in-house comprehensive architectural programming and coordinating with outside consultants. Responsibilities include conducting due diligence analyses of existing buildings/areas, preparing reports to support comprehensive architectural programming statements, proactively managing stakeholder expectations during the project design process, and participating in the negotiation of professional design service contracts with outside consultants.

Essential Duties

The Architect Principal - Semiconductor Research and Engineering Facilities at Macro Technology Works plays a crucial role in managing and overseeing complex architectural and engineering projects. This position involves coordinating design teams, ensuring compliance with university guidelines, overseeing mechanical systems, and managing all stages of project development and execution. The Architect Principal ensures high standards of quality, efficiency, and effectiveness in all project phases, from conception to post-occupancy. Additionally, this role serves as the code expert for the research facility, ensuring all projects comply with relevant codes and regulations.

  • Manage multiple projects and coordinate the work of design teams to ensure compliance with the university’s design guidelines.
  • Prepare detailed architectural programming documents and conceptual budget estimates.
  • Negotiate fees with selected design professionals and prepare contracts within Arizona Board of Regents guidelines.
  • Review the work of consulting architects to ensure university standards and contractual requirements are met.
  • Monitor the operation and design of mechanical systems that support cleanrooms and labs, including Make-up Air Systems, Air Handling Systems, Exhaust Systems, Chillers, Boilers, Cooling Water Systems, and HVAC water treatment systems.
  • Coordinate with external entities and key stakeholders at ASU Research Park.
  • Review and evaluate standard specifications and details for potential adoption by the University.
  • Provide technical advice to management and staff and consult with inspectors regarding mechanical issues encountered during construction.
  • Formulate standard specification language for mechanical construction projects and represent the University on panels and boards as needed.
  • Attend final inspections and recommend acceptance or rejection of completed work.
  • Incorporate and coordinate Facilities Management needs with projects to ensure ease of maintenance and long-term benefits.
  • Participate in long-range master facility planning to identify future facility, space, budgetary, and scheduling needs.
  • Prepare official solicitation documents, including complex statements of work and specifications for construction and maintenance projects, and advertisements for RFPs and RFQs.
  • Conduct proposal reviews, organize, and conduct interviews for selecting Architectural, Engineering, and Construction Management firms.
  • Collaborate with the Office of General Counsel (OGC) and Purchasing and Business Services to negotiate terms and conditions, review contracts, and monitor consultant and contractor activities.
  • Provide cost estimating, value engineering, and prepare budget documents, cost analysis reports, and financial analyses.
  • Oversee testing, acceptance, and inspection to ensure compliance with all codes, specifications, and cost controls.
  • Ensure post-occupancy facility commissioning and address any operational issues that arise.
  • Conduct code reviews and analyses to ensure all projects comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Serve as the code expert for the research facility, providing guidance and interpretation of building codes and standards.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of all applicable codes, regulations, and standards relevant to semiconductor research and engineering facilities.
  • Advise design teams and project stakeholders on code compliance and best practices to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies and inspectors to facilitate code approvals and resolve compliance issues.
  • Prepare and update code compliance documentation and reports for all phases of project development.
  • Use ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.

DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or related field and ten (10) years of architectural experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Registered as an Architect in the State of Arizona OR NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards) Certification and become a registered Architect in the State of Arizona within six (6) months after date of hire. Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

Desired Qualifications

Experience in:

  • Being a registered Architect for 5-10 years
  • Designing and managing Higher Education building types
  • Leading teams and managing complex, large-scale projects for at least 2 years
  • Managing professional design service contracts with consultants
  • Engaging project stakeholders in the decision-making process
  • Making executive committee design presentations for go/no-go decisions
  • Working in a Facilities Operational, Engineering, or Architectural role in an advanced semiconductor cleanroom (Class 10/100, ISO Class 4/5)
  • Designing advanced technology facilities
  • Operating advanced semiconductor cleanrooms and laboratory facilities
  • Managing mechanical systems that support cleanrooms and labs

Knowledge of:
  • Principles of operation for cleanrooms and mechanical systems
  • Local, state, and federal codes, regulations, and mandates, especially building and fire codes
  • H5 semiconductor regulations
  • Cleanroom performance monitoring for particles, airflow, and AMC’s
  • Control systems and programming of controls
  • Life Safety and International Building Code requirements
  • Cost estimating for construction projects and A/E design fees
  • AutoCAD, Revit, Sketch-Up, or other electronic sketching software

Evidence of:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture, Engineering or Business.
  • LEED Accreditation
  • Effective communication skills

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of hazardous materials incidents.
  • Drives university vehicles and carts.

This position is located at the ASU Research Park in Tempe, AZ, and may require working from other campuses depending on operational needs.
