Job Description

Works closely and collaboratively with the Principal Investigator (PI, Dr. Hamed Arami) and his research group and collaborators to support and facilitate Dr. Arami's (PI) research lab for pursuing brain tumor imaging and therapy in pre-clinical and clinical models. Tasks include working with PI to plan the experiments and manage the required administrative tasks related to this project. Incumbents will work independently under the general direction provided by the PI to support their NIH-funded research by monitoring related lab activities and correspondences and maintaining official records of the lab paperwork for this project. Incumbents may have contact with high-level administrative offices, grant managers at ASU and NIH, and researchers in Arami's group, requiring business and scientific vocabulary, tact, discretion, and judgment related to this project. The incumbent will identify and acquire necessary resources and coordinate efforts by the PI to ensure the timely delivery of project outcomes in accordance with the sponsoring source's expectations.

Essential Duties

The main responsibility will be supporting Dr. Arami's lab in pursuing and expanding its brain tumor imaging and therapy program. Possible responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Executes a variety of lab support activities for the supervisor, such as related correspondences, interpreting the outcomes and explaining established policies and procedures, especially those from ASU animal research and biosafety facilities, summarizing related reports and information to facilitate the supervisor's review, and investigating, evaluating, and resolving problems within the scope of this project.
  • Maintains and updates brain tumor therapy data, imaging databases, and spreadsheets using different software.
  • Prepares special and recurring reports and logbooks related to animal brain tumor studies containing specialized or sensitive information, following the supervisor's general direction.
  • Prepares or directs the preparation of minutes, notices, manuals, agendas, and correspondence with all supporting documentation, requiring the application of specialized knowledge of the ongoing brain tumor therapy and imaging program.
  • Monitors and updates inventories, and expenditures for different human-derived or animal brain tumor cells and tissues, animal models and their housing, imaging contrast agents and therapeutic agent’s inventory, costs, budget, and account records; authorizes and/or approves related payments within established lab guidelines.
  • Plans and arranges the lab members' attendance at conferences, meetings, and/or special events under general instructions from their supervisor to present their most recent brain tumor therapy and imaging results; communicates arrangements to appropriate research personnel.
  • Implements any new cell and animal tumor model handling procedures and practices impacted by decisions made by the supervisor, project reviewers, or collaborators.
  • Assists the lab with collecting and organizing the lab reports and weekly research updates for this project, updating and maintaining researchers' datasets, preparing and distributing faculty correspondence, preparing for annual research progress report, collecting supportive administrative documents for new grants and awards from NIH and other related funding agencies.
  • Plans, develops, implements, and manages the project team in coordination with the PI through complete task definitions, work requirement identification, and assignments.
  • Works closely with PI and lab members to define the project scope, strategy, budget, and outcomes.
  • Establishes and continually monitors/manages project expectations with PI; assigns tasks and identifies issues for resolution to ensure optimal team effectiveness.
  • Prepares and maintains all project status reports and schedules; tracks milestones/deliverables, critical paths, and dependencies; Responds to all inquiries regarding project status.
  • Prepares all post-project reports and summaries/filings to ensure timely dissemination of information.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and 2 years related experience; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and collaborative working relationships among team members.
  • Demonstrated general knowledge and interest in clinical terminologies related to brain tumor diagnosis and therapy. Demonstrated knowledge of standard office policies and procedures.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with researchers in the lab, veterinary staff, collaborators, and personnel in different core facilities that support this project.
  • Experience in composition, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Experience in typing/word processing and use of personal computer/software.

Working Environment

  • Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computers.
