Job Description
The Facilities, Infrastructure, and Safety group within the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering is seeking a Facilities Safety Manager. Under limited supervision, the Facilities Safety Manager will be responsible for developing, planning, organizing, and monitoring safe and environmentally responsible operations for labs, classrooms, and office areas across the Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE). This role emphasizes compliance with university-wide Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) policies and procedures.
Key responsibilities include providing training, guidance, and supervision for safe research operations, conducting EHS audits, lab safety inspections, chemical process reviews, safety reviews, EHS training, and data management. The Facilities Safety Manager will serve as a leader and technical advisor across all Schools and departments of FSE and occasionally at the University level. This position reports to the Assistant Director for Infrastructure and Safety.

Essential Duties
- Collaborates with ASU EHS to ensure FSE alignment with university-wide policies and procedures.
- Participates in university-wide safety committees, representing FSE in matters of health and safety.
- Provides technical guidance to lab managers, facilities managers, and facilities project managers across FSE on EHS-related matters, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
- Provides advisory support with indirect supervision of lab managers on EHS-related aspects of lab management duties, ensuring compliance with safety protocols; includes review of safety performance with feedback for continuous improvement.
- Provides training and guidance to Lab Managers, Research Faculty/Teams, Staff, and Students regarding Safe Practices and Operating Procedures.
- Performs safety assessments in FSE Labs (teaching and research), Chemical storage and work areas: Ensures compliance with Regulations, Evaluates Chemical Processes, Equipment Safety, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Engineering Controls, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); includes equipment review, operating conditions, assists with repair guidance, and reports malfunctions.
- Plans and conducts compliance inspections and generates corrective action reports to address identified issues.
- Creates risk mitigation plans and provides necessary training to stakeholders to ensure the successful execution of plans.
- Identifies opportunities for improvements in FSE Lab Safety Programs with assistance for Lab Registrations/documentation sets.
- Provides guidance and supervision to FSE lab stakeholders to correct violations of the university chemical hygiene plan and policies, including local, state, or federal safety regulations.
- Guides stakeholders in handling hazardous waste, ensuring proper analysis, characterization, and disposal in compliance with regulations.
- Develops and monitors Emergency Response Programs across FSE, ensuring preparedness for various emergencies.
- Provides emergency response with coverage during business hours, after-hours, and weekends(24/7) using established protocols. Ensures safety incidents are addressed promptly with a clear escalation plan to distribute workload among teams.
- Collaborates with other university departments to ensure consistent application of safety protocols. Facilitates knowledge sharing on safety practices across different research disciplines.
- In collaboration with EHS, develops, implements, and continuously improves health and safety educational programs within FSE and across the University.
- Provides training and guidance to staff, faculty, and students on chemical safety techniques, packaging, and labeling practices (may include written bulletins, lab signage, newsletters, or presentations).
- Investigates safety-related incidents, recommends necessary corrective actions with formal incident reporting and follow-up processes.
- Guides and supervises chemical spill clean-up efforts, ensuring the use of proper chemical safety techniques; Report spills to ASU EHS and Hazardous Materials Handling teams.
- Performs assessments of work environments to identify, quantify, and mitigate employee exposures to occupational hazards.
- Provides training and guidance to FSE lab stakeholders regarding on-line laboratory safety registration and laboratory safety plans.
- Consults with the FSE community regarding facilities and employee safety, including confined space entry, lockout/tagout, electrical safety, respiratory protection, indoor air quality, fall protection, contractor safety, emergency response, and other regulatory programs related to facilities management.
- Utilizes safety management software/tools for tracking safety incidents, compliance, and training programs. Recommends improvements to enhance safety reporting and monitoring capabilities.
- Stays current with evolving local, state, and federal safety regulations, as well as advancements in safety technology and practices.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in chemistry, safety, industrial hygiene, occupational health, engineering, or other related field AND five (5) years of related experience, which includes one (1) year of supervisory experience; OR, Nine (9) years of related experience, which includes one (1) year of supervisory experience; Or, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Candidate must possess a valid Arizona State Driver’s License

- Experience in academic research labs.
- Experience in focusing on the consultative role rather than enforcing compliance.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the needs of students, researchers, and principal investigators, while maintaining the highest safety standards.
- Experience in producing results while working autonomously, with little oversight
- Experience with teaching adults.
- Experience in Material Science, Nano-Fabrication, Semiconductor Chemical Processes and Biomaterials.
- Experience developing process and safety protocols.
Working Environment
- Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office or laboratory setting, with extended periods of sitting or standing.
- Requires standing for varying lengths of time and walking moderate distances to perform work.
- Walking between campus buildings is required, along with travel to supported FSE Lab sites off the Tempe campus.
- Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 25 pounds.
- Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include resolving conflicts.
- Clear communication is essential to perform job functions.
- Occasional travel, involving the operation of a motor vehicle.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including respirators, PAPR or N95 respirators, clean room bunny suits, and PPE for biological and chemical research and spill response.
- Regular use of standard office equipment, including but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone, and associated computer/technology peripherals.
- Regular use of lab equipment related to engineering controls and safety equipment.
- This position is an on-campus resource during standard ASU business hours.
- This position also receives managerial review of objectives.
