Communications Specialist
Job Description
The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University seeks a marketing-minded media creator to advance the school’s recruitment and engagement goals through strong strategic communication. Working as part of a team of communications professionals, the specialist will work collaboratively across the school and with university partners to promote the school’s community, achievements and brand through creative storytelling and strategic organic social content. This position serves as the school’s lead social media storyteller, community manager and multimedia creator.
The successful candidate will be an audience-first social- and multimedia storyteller with skills befitting the nation’s leading journalism and mass communications school. They will proactively mine stories from the Cronkite community, efficiently create compelling visual media, engage the school’s digital audiences and creatively respond to performance metrics.
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position performed at the school’s Downtown Phoenix campus.

Essential Duties
- Create written, visual and multimedia content for the school’s digital platforms on deadline and in compliance with brand standards and AP Style
- Cover school and university events live, creating instant and short-deadline photo, video and graphics content
- Plan, create and schedule social media content according to editorial, events, academic and special initiatives calendars
- Proactively engage with school stakeholders and community members to mine and tell effective stories in pursuit of school recruitment and engagement goals
- Create and edit compelling visual media (including photo, video and graphics) using the Adobe Creative Suite
- Serve as the school’s community manager, engaging audiences where they are
- Use native social media platform data, site data and third-party tools to measure and report platform and content performance
- Coordinate visual media with team members
- Serve as liaison to related central university communications teams
- Measure and report on digital content performance
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, Marketing, Education or a related field AND three (3) years of related work experience in the development of comprehensive and creative communication; OR seven (7) years of related work experience; OR Any equivalent combination of experience and or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved. Certificates from recognized programs that verify mastery of tools and techniques relevant to the assignment may substitute for up to six (6) months of experience.
Desired Qualifications
- A strong portfolio of organic social and multimedia content and campaign work
- Demonstrated experience using organic social media to advance strategic goals
- Demonstrated experience in community management and engagement
- Strong writing and editing skills, and AP Style knowledge
- Strong visual media production skills and fluency in the Adobe Creative Suite
- Experience creating or producing digital and social content/campaigns at a professional content organization or agency
- Experience creating and managing a content calendar and social planning tools (e.g. Hootsuite)
- Demonstrated experience using a combination of native social media platform data (e.g. Meta), site data (e.g. GA4) and third-party tools (e.g. SparkToro, Brandwatch) to measure and report performance
- Demonstrated experience using a project management system (e.g. Asana, Monday.com, Basecamp)
- Experience creating organic social campaigns and scheduling content
- Experience creating and sharing social, photo and video content at live events
- Demonstrated experience using performance data to pivot content
- Experience using content and/or campaigns to advance higher education admissions goals
Working Environment
- Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.
- Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
- Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
- Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
- Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.;
- Supervises designated employees that include hiring, training, evaluations, disciplinary actions and scheduling.
- This position reports to the department administrator.
