This position is part of the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence (SCAI). SCAI is the largest of the Fulton Schools of Engineering with over 12,000 domestic and international students between our Tempe, Polytechnic, West Valley and Online campuses. The School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence (SCAI) is seeking an Undergraduate Manager for our Poly/Online Undergraduate Advising team. This position will be 25% academic advising and 75% administrative. The administrative portion of the position will include supervision and professional development of SCAI Undergraduate Academic Success Advisors with various levels of experience. This position will work as part of the Undergraduate leadership team along with the Manager Lead of UG Poly/Online and the Associate Director of Academic Services in SCAI to develop communication strategies for Poly/Online and to make strategic recommendations to support the student advising experience. This position reports to the Manager Lead for UG Poly/Online in our SCAI Advising Polytechnic Office.

Essential Duties

Supervision:

  • Responsible for hiring, onboarding, and performance management of designated Academic Success Specialist staff;
  • Leads/supervises academic success staff in the provision of academic advising, recruitment/retention, and/or academic program functions for students to ensure needs of students are met for successful completion of program of study;
  • Establishes performance goals for staff and monitors progress throughout the year;
  • Acts as team leader or senior resource for professional staff;
  • Serves as a liaison between undergraduate advising staff and the Manager Lead for UG Poly/Online, Program Chairs, Engineering Dean's Office, and other university student support programs;
  • Regularly attends supervisory and HR trainings to ensure effective supervision.

Academic Advising:
  • Assist in developing and implementing recruitment and retention plans.
  • Reviews undergraduate standards petitions.
  • Provides academic advising and/or interacts with students in support of academic success;
  • Works closely and collaboratively with Manager Lead and Chairs and university administrators to implement policies and practices in support of college, department, and university goals;
  • Assists in development of academic advising policy;
  • Assists in development and implementation of recruitment and retention programs;
  • Utilizes a variety of university data and programmatic direction to promote student academic success including eAdvisor, DARS, Peoplesoft, SalesForce, WebXtender, and Analytics;
  • Acts as college/department liaison to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to academic success;
  • Acts as a college/department liaison to department, college, and university committees on issues related to academic success;
  • Responds to student questions, concerns, and escalations;
  • Works with students to resolve all issues to ensure ongoing satisfaction with program and successful progress to completion;
  • Works collaboratively and collegially with academic units and services throughout the university to facilitate comprehensive student support.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in a related field AND six (6) years of related experience in advising, student recruitment/retention, related student services, teaching in a college/university environment, which includes three (3) years of leading work groups or supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of management and supervisory principles;
  • Experience with staff supervision;
  • Experience in higher education undergraduate academic advising, preferred experience working with online populations (4 or more years);
  • Experience working with engineering students at the university level;
  • Knowledge of ASU, Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering;
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in academic advising;
  • Experience in student outreach, recruitment, and retention initiatives;
  • Experience in coordinating large scale recruitment and retention events, including designing presentation materials and giving presentations in a variety of group settings;
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook), Analytics, PeopleSoft, Salesforce, WebXtender, and Degree Audit Systems (DARS);
  • Experience interacting with diverse populations;
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.

Working Environment

  • Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate controlled office setting subject to extended period of sitting.
  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer.
  • Bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties.
  • Ability to work both independently or within a complex structured team.
  • Normally receives no instructions on routine work and general instructions on new assignments with review of completed tasks.
  • Exercises judgment within generally defined practices & policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
