Job Description
The Center for Health Information and Research (CHiR) is a dynamic multidisciplinary Center in the College of Health Solutions that works with a wealth of data relevant to health and health care in Arizona and around the nation. CHiR seeks to expand our team of data scientists experienced in working with health data to conduct data engineering, analytics, and statistical programming.
Under senior technical direction, this position uses a variety of data science tools on health and health-related data, participates in efforts to manage data, conducts data queries and extractions, and performs statistical analysis, modeling and reporting for various projects and service requests for health services and outcomes studies.
- Knowledge of health claims, electronic medical record data or other health related data.
- Demonstrated knowledge of statistical analysis, database architecture, data mining and predictive modeling tools and techniques.
- Moderate to high level of skill in using SAS and/or SQL.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn a wide variety of tools and languages (e.g., R, Python, Tableau, ArcMap, etc.) for use in data visualizations, database software, secondary statistical analyses and geospatial analyses.
- Skill in completing projects with evidence of problem solving, creative and critical thinking and the ability to communicate findings in a clear, accurate and user‐friendly manner.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team.

Essential Duties
- Conducts data engineering tasks and statistical analyses of health and related data according to specifications using SAS or SQL as a primary programming language.
- Creates data visualizations, analytics, and geospatial analyses using various software tools and languages.
- Identifies, implements and interprets appropriate statistical modeling, trend analysis, and regression analyses to evaluate the impact of innovations and interventions intended to improve health outcomes.
- Prepares or oversees the preparation of reports, dashboards and presentations.
- Uses effective project planning techniques to break down projects into tasks and ensure deadlines are met.
- Works collaboratively with researchers and other data scientists on all aspects of projects, including improving the effectiveness of computational models by using data and feedback from stakeholders.
- Performs data management functions and maintains databases and related programs to ensure data quality.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Computer Information Systems, Business Information, Economics or a related field and three (3) years of related data analysis experience, OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance systems and uses health coding systems such as ICD-10 diagnosis codes, HCPCS/CPT codes, and DRG codes.
- Experience with tools and languages such as R, Python, Stata, Tableau, or ArcMap.
- Experience with health care claims data.

The Center for Health Information and Research (CHiR) is a community resource and partner for those seeking comprehensive health information, data analytics and reporting. We collect, process and store health and social determinants data from a variety of sources in our HIPAA compliant repository. This data is usable in data science, individually or linked with other data sources. CHiR specializes in several data science techniques, including inferential modeling, time series analyses, geographic information systems, cluster analyses and social network analysis. CHiR's team of data scientists works with clients to provide the analytical results and answer to their most important health and health care questions.
