Sr Communications Specialist
Job Description
Under the administrative direction of the executive director of the American Indian Policy Institute and with a dotted line to ASU Law Marketing and Communications, this position is responsible for overseeing social media efforts and account management for department/unit initiatives and projects. The Sr. Communications Specialist is an integral part of the team playing a key role in executing communication plans and strategies while providing feedback and ideas as an expert in social media. They work collaboratively to effectively promote the American Indian Policy Institute within ASU Law's initiatives, ensuring that key messages reach the intended audiences to advance the college's and department’s identified goals.

Essential Duties
- Manages existing policy communication initiatives, programs, and projects through analysis, planning, creation, and development of materials/content specific to tribal communities.
- Suggests and implements additional policy communications endeavors for the Institute going forward.
- Oversees all existing policy communications towards AIPI’s tribal outreach including publications, social media, and dissemination of information via the web.
- Advances AIPI’s priorities and department objectives, positive reputation, strategic plan promotion and fostering fruitful partnerships through communications.
- Plans, develops, and writes creative, high-quality communications for multiple audiences using multiple digital and print communications mediums (e.g., email, print, web, and social media).
- Serve as an in-house reporter for the unit to seek stories and craft compelling articles. Provide ideas and proactively conduct outreach to faculty, administration, students and alumni to tell their stories.
- Write articles, announcements/press releases, web copy, newsletters and award nominations for blog posts and newsletters.
- Oversees and implements monthly newsletters, occasional policy documents, blog posts, and occasional press releases.
- Responsible for oversight of social media strategies and implementation on all of AIPI related social media accounts.
- Manage all aspects of department/unit social media and communication platforms, communities and audiences, including, but not limited to, MailChimp, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, YouTube and LinkedIn. This can include both prospective and current student-facing channels.
- Manage social media monitoring tools and provide analysis including, but not limited to, comprehensive analytics, competitor coverage, share of voice and social listening.
- Provide direction for social media strategy, including general best practices and audience engagement through different social platforms.
- Collaborate with ASU Law Marketing and Communications and the American Indian Policy Institute teams to help develop and maintain a clear brand voice and style within social media efforts.
- Design audience-building and social engagement strategies using performance-based and earned media tactics.
- Create marketing collateral and graphics for publications.
- Responsible for capturing and producing final creative assets for social channels, including video, photos and graphics.
- Provide insights into the latest trends and best practices to ensure department/unit remains innovative in social media efforts.
- Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with team members, project managers, and creative resources such as multimedia, SEO and content teams along with other outside.
- Contribute to the development and execution of communications plans and strategies.
- Proactively conduct media outreach for strategic placements. Build and maintain a media contact list. Respond to media requests and coordinate interviews with leadership, faculty and staff. Advise AIPI leadership on public relations opportunities that support strategic initiatives.
- Develop new and maintain current relationships with media organizations. Assist reporters and editors in their efforts to understand AIPI’s mission and activities. Track and flag media opportunities and coverage; produce and submit coverage reports.
- Attends events to conduct real-time for story creations and/or social media promotion as necessary.
- Posts blogs, policy solutions, and press releases to the website using basic html.
- Establishes a resource network in the community, the nation, and the international arena to identify and cultivate partners.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the goals of the department.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor¿s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or other related field AND four (4) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced educational degree, Master’s degree, or another comparable credential.
- Demonstrated creativity and ability to develop and adhere to a brand aesthetic working with Canva, Creative Cloud, or similar programs.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, Dropbox, Adobe, Slack, Zoom, etc.
- Experience working with various web clients such as HooteSuite, Mail Chimp, bitly, Salesforce, and other platforms.
- Demonstrated knowledge of working with or in Tribal communities or on Tribal communications
- Evidence of effective communication with experience in writing, editing and storytelling.
- Experience with AP style
- Experience in graphic design and basic HTML code is a plus.
- Experience in managing social media brand accounts.
- Demonstrated knowledge of content calendar development, copywriting and blogging.
- Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques used in communications strategies
- Knowledge of the principles, standards and practices of project management.
- Knowledge of internet-based social networking formats, audiences, and usage standards.
- Ability to work in an environment subject to quickly changing priorities and tight deadlines.
Working Environment
Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions.
