Action Lab is seeking a highly motivated, processes-oriented Database Analyst, a data engineer to
support Dreamscape Learn projects. Dreamscape Learn is a collaboration between Arizona State
University and Dreamscape Immersive, leveraging cinematic storytelling and VR technology to reenvision
how courses can be taught.

Action Lab combines the power of data and research to evaluate and inform business decisions to create
innovative solutions. Under the general guidance of a Data Architect, the Data Engineer will support and
extend projects in Action Lab’s Dreamscape Learn portfolio by automating processes, generating
complex datasets, and maintaining rigorous data standards.

This is a hybrid role. The incumbent of this position will be required to work from our office located in
Scottsdale, Arizona three days per week (ideally in office on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and one other day
that aligns with other work activities).

Essential Duties:

  • Makes recommendations for enhancements to current procedures, including assessments of the algorithmic complexity, efficiency, and potential alternatives
  • Translate business, research needs, and questions into reliable automated workstreams
  • Periodically review configuration for enhancement opportunities; reviews current needs and provides ongoing support of data requirements through understanding of available data and active systems
  • Query, transform and clean complex data; join data accurately across multiple data streams
  • Work iteratively to create and maintain testing processes throughout development
  • Reviews, modifies, and rewrites existing code to optimize it or adapt it to fit new requirements
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, analyzes and resolves technical issues to ensure ongoing data integrity
  • Work with stakeholders to identify data gaps and issues, then implement solutions
  • Work alongside other EdPlus teams on the maintenance, testing, and implementation of data systems
  • Works primarily within the scope of well-defined workstreams with high level guidance from senior staff
  • Interpret and understand business requirements from researchers and instructional designers
  • Assume or coordinate other duties or projects as assigned or directed
  • Related analytical processes and reviews
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or closely related field and 2 years database modeling, creating and editing stored procedures including needs assessment of enterprise-wide database needs OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Evidence of an advanced degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field
  • Experience working in a higher education setting, preferably with higher education student data
  • Ability to read, write, and debug code in Python, Javascript, or equivalent programming languages
  • Experience in designing, developing, and maintaining ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) workflows
  • Advanced SQL skills including CTEs, window functions, and complex joins
  • Ability to develop and implement solutions in a Cloud environment like Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, or Microsoft Azure
  • Proficiency with an ETL tool such as Alteryx
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office tools including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook as well as the corresponding Google Suite tools including docs, sheets, and slides
  • Ability to work effectively in an environment requiring balancing multiple competing deadlines and priorities
  • Skill in maintaining and managing small to medium-sized projects
  • Experience with Jira or related project management tools
  • Skill in thinking critically and developing creative solutions to challenging problems
  • Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with a variety of individuals
  • Ability to lead by example in communication, participation, and encouragement

Working Environment

Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, walking. Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer; bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties. Regular review of completed tasks.
