HAITC, as part of the School of Community Resources and Development (SCRD) in the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions is seeking one full-time, benefits-eligible, 9-month, non-tenure track Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor in the areas of sustainable tourism, parks and recreation management. We aim to attract enthusiastic tourism, parks or recreation specialist interested in enhancing the lives of students through teaching and service. As a full-time Career Track Faculty member of Arizona State University, the position is permanently located at our Mission Hills campus in Haikou, Hainan, China. Hainan is a sub-tropical and tropical island with beautiful beaches and tropical forests. It is often called the Hawaii of China.

HAITC is an innovative joint college in partnership between ASU and Hainan University (HNU) and is one of the Sino-foreign cooperative institutions approved by China’s Ministry of Education. This unique partnership began in the Fall of 2017 and offers three dual-degree programs namely Parks, Recreation and Sport Management, Tourism Development and Management, and Public Service & Public Policy at the undergraduate level. HAITC launched two master’s programs in Sustainable Tourism and Emergency Management in Fall 2022. HAITC hosts over 1,100 students and is expanding its programs and enrollment. Courses are taught by both HNU and ASU faculty. Hainan University (HNU) is a comprehensive provincial university in Haikou, Hainan, China. It is one of China’s “211 Project” key universities.

The School of Community Resources and Development

The School of Community Resources and Development is one of four schools in the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions, a vibrant community of active scholars committed to excellence in education and innovative responses to collective problems. SCRD is ranked #7 in the world and #2 in the U.S. for Hospitality, Leisure, Sport, and Tourism according to the Center for World University Rankings. The mission of SCRD is to co-create transformative solutions that enhance the social, cultural, environmental, and economic well-being of communities.

Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to teach up to four courses per semester at the undergraduate or graduate level, deliver excellent in-class instruction and participate in service activities for the college, profession, and community. Supervision of senior thesis projects and participation in master’s degree committees is encouraged. Courses are taught in English; Chinese language competency is not required. The appointment will begin in Hainan, China, mid-August 2025.

The Watts College of Public Services and Community Solutions has a student body of over 6,700 undergraduate and graduate students, with over 57 percent being students of color. SCRD is fully committed to a culturally inclusive faculty and student body.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D., in tourism management, recreation, leisure studies, geography, business, or a closely related field from an accredited institution by time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of tourism, parks, recreation, and leisure industries.
  • Demonstrated prior higher education teaching or guest lecturing experience in parks, recreation, and tourism-related courses.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student-centered learning and inclusion consistent with ASU’s Charter.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience working in the tourism, parks, and recreation industries.
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more specialties such as sustainable tourism, park management, leadership, and professional development, or inclusion in fields of tourism, parks, and recreation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with culturally inclusive populations.
  • Demonstrated experience with technology or course management systems and using innovative pedagogical tools.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in ecotourism or sustainable tourism.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the U.S. higher education system and/or similar multicultural academic environments.

  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness such as student or peer evaluations, syllabi, assignments, student portfolios, or training materials you have designed (a maximum of 3 pieces of evidence accepted).
  • The names and contact information of three professional references (name, title, organization, e-mail address, phone number). One reference needs to be a current supervisor. Please note that references are not contacted until a candidate is identified as a finalist for the position and the candidate is notified that they are a finalist.
  • If invited for an interview, applicants are expected to give a demonstration of teaching.
