Academic Enterprise Communications is seeking a motivated and experienced individual to join our team as Assistant Director, California Communications. In this role, the Assistant Director will lead all student recruitment communication strategies for ASU’s academic programs based in Los Angeles.

ASU’s academic programs in Los Angeles include film programs in ASU’s Sidney Poitier New American Film School, fashion and design programs in ASU FIDM, as well as degree programs offered in by California College of ASU.

The Assistant Director will be a natural collaborator who works closely with ASU Admission Services, the ASU Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, and the university’s brand strategy and media relations teams. The ideal candidate will have first-hand knowledge of college-going behaviors and mindsets of California high school and transfer students, and their families. Using that knowledge and experience, they will be asked to create impactful communication strategies that influence application and enrollment to campus-based programs in Los Angeles.

This position will be based at the ASU Center in Los Angeles with hybrid or full-time remote work options available. The ideal candidate is organized, quick-working, solution-oriented, and passionate about higher education. They will have direct career experience working in communications and marketing, ideally within higher education, or within LA's creative industries.

Essential Duties

  • Content Management: Plan, write, schedule, track, and analyze communications across various platforms — including email, print, video, web and social media.
  • Communication Strategy: Using various channels, develop and implement a comprehensive communication plan and messages to effectively promote earning a degree at ASU in Los Angeles, targeting students in California and those from across the U.S. and around the world who wish to earn a degree offered LA.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with Admission Services, academic colleges and California College of ASU on messaging and promotion of degree programs.
  • Content Accuracy: Ensure all communications are accurate and delivered on time.
  • Storytelling: Collaborate with university leadership, faculty and staff to highlight compelling stories, creative industry highlights, and innovative programs that resonate with prospective students.
  • Email Campaigns: Lead the development, execution, and analysis of outbound email marketing campaigns, following established guidelines and procedures.
  • Effectiveness Evaluation: Assess the effectiveness of communication efforts by analyzing metrics such as open and click rates, and make data-driven adjustments as needed.
  • Print Materials: Create and manage print materials, including California viewbooks, brochures, postcards, and other direct mail pieces, ensuring all deadlines are met without going over budget.
  • Customer Service: Provide excellent, responsive support to all stakeholders.
  • Relationship Building: Identify and maintain partnerships with university and community organizations for support building strong working relationships with partners.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND six (6) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Ten (10) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Career experience in higher education recruitment practices and principles, or within high-schools or with high-school students.
  • Experience in the creative industries, specifically in Los Angeles.
  • Experience in creating communications and marketing strategies.
  • Experience in verbal, visual, and written communications including the ability to express ideas in a clear and logical manner.
  • Experience composing, editing, and proofreading written materials.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Experience in higher education recruitment practices and principles.

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse (75%); frequently required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work (25%) Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds (35%) Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions. Calculator, telephone, computer (monitor, keyboard and mouse), printer, fax and copier. This position receives regular managerial review of objectives.
