Position Overview:
The Director of Communications will provide strategic leadership for all marketing and communications efforts at Barrett, The Honors College. The goal is to enhance the honors student experience and promote the college to prospective students, current students, families, alumni, donors, and other key stakeholders. This role will manage the college’s brand identity, oversee community relations, lead a team of communications professionals, develop and execute a multi-channel marketing plan to elevate the visibility and reputation of Barrett, The Honors College.

Essential Duties

  • Lead and execute a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy aimed at enhancing the college’s brand and promoting the honors student experience.
  • Coordinate with the ASU Media Relations and Strategic Communications and partner colleges to manage public relations, including media outreach, press releases, and crisis communications.
  • Guide a team of marketing and communications professionals to ensure consistency in brand messaging and outreach across all digital and print platforms.
  • Collaborate with staff to plan and promote college events, advertising campaigns, and community engagement initiatives.
  • Coordinate with the ASU Office of Brand Strategy and Management, Outreach Hub, Media Relations and Strategic Communications and partner colleges to create media plans, advertising and communications materials and quickly respond to market conditions.
  • Oversee the development and execution of digital strategies, including managing email communications, and social media platforms (Facebook, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, etc.).
  • Develop and maintain a cohesive marketing automation strategy, integrating digital content and monitoring performance to adjust tactics as necessary.
  • Monitor and analyze marketing performance, utilizing data to inform future campaigns and improve communication effectiveness.
  • Oversee the creation of all marketing graphics, promotional materials, and publications, ensuring alignment with college brand standards.
  • Manage departmental budgeting, approving expenditures, and monitoring financial progress throughout the year.
  • Lead recruitment, development, and supervision of a high-performing team, including staff and student workers.
  • Work with external vendors and partners as necessary to achieve communication goals.
  • Act as the college’s brand manager, ensuring that all communications reflect the college’s identity and core values while advancing the ASU brand.
  • Serve as lead communicator and editor for high-profile college-level content and provide expert communication advice to faculty, staff, and administration, offering strategies for effective internal and external messaging.
  • Stay current on industry trends and emerging technologies, implementing innovative approaches to enhance Barrett’s visibility and impact.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Arts Administration, or related field AND eight years experience in planning and implementing a comprehensive communication/marketing program for an organization, including five years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Education: Evidence of a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field (Master’s degree in preferred).
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in marketing, communications, or public relations, preferably in an academic or nonprofit environment.
    • Managing multi-channel marketing campaigns and leading teams.
    • Overseeing digital strategy, including social media, and email marketing.
    • In managing media relations, including building relationships with journalists, responding to media inquiries, and pitching stories to local, national, and digital media outlets.
    • Understanding data analytics to measure campaign effectiveness and inform strategy.
  • Skills:
    • Strong leadership and project management skills with the ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Evidence of effective communication skills, with a proven ability to write engaging content for diverse audiences.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of branding principles and experience in managing institutional branding.
    • Experience in managing a budget and allocating resources effectively.
    • Experience in marketing tools and platforms, including marketing automation systems and social media management.
    • Ability to think strategically and execute creative solutions in marketing and communications.

Working Environment

Physical Demands:

  • Some local travel may be required to represent the organization at events or meetings.
  • Occasional need to work outside of normal business hours, including evenings and weekends, depending on project deadlines or events.
