The School of Applied Sciences and Arts (SASA), in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts (CISA) at Arizona State University (ASU), invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible, career-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor with a focus on the issues involving military veterans and their families both while in service and civilian life as well as broader issues within sociology, political science, history or the candidate’s related field. The anticipated start date for this position is Fall 2025. This hire will contribute to the program needs of the school, including the BA program in Applied Military and Veterans Studies, the Naval Community College Military Studies AA program at ASU, and the Interdisciplinary Studies program. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, nine-month fiscal-year position with a starting annual salary commensurate with experience. This career-track position includes a path to promotion at Associate Teaching Professor and Full Teaching Professor as career-track faculty. It is housed within the SASA faculty on the Polytechnic campus. Career-track faculty participate in service contributions and have access to various career development and funding opportunities within SASA, CISA, and ASU. Candidates must reside in Arizona or be willing to relocate.
The School seeks applicants committed to outstanding in-person and online teaching and effective program administration. The teaching obligations of the position consist primarily of in-person teaching at ASU Polytechnic in undergraduate courses. The successful candidate will be able to offer an array of courses addressing topics in the area of veterans and military studies as well as the ability to offer courses in other areas such as interdisciplinary studies, sociology, history, science, technology, and society, or courses related to military and international law and ethics. The initial teaching load is eight courses per year over nine months (Fall and Spring semesters). Additional functions include mentoring undergraduate students and supporting the program’s administration and curriculum development.
This is a non-tenure eligible position renewable on an academic year basis contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the university.
The School of Applied Sciences and Arts (SASA) delivers science and liberal arts courses to students from all majors at the Polytechnic and Downtown campuses. Over 170 faculty serve over 4,400 majors in career-focused applied-learning programs, ranging from undergraduate applied biology majors in pre-vet, pre-dental, and horticulture programs to majors in interdisciplinary studies, the history of science, technology, and innovation, and STS (science, technology, and society). Our students also pursue graduate work in Applied Biology, Liberal Studies, Narrative Studies, and Integrative Social Sciences. Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Terminal degree in sociology, political science, history, or a related field by time of appointment
- Evidence suggesting an ability to teach courses in military and veterans studies based on previous experience, publication, or teaching
- Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students, and communities to advance the ASU Charter.
Desired Qualifications:
- Ability to teach courses in areas of specialization such as in sociology, political science, history of science, medicine, or technology, military and international law, interdisciplinary studies, or military history.
- Evidence of successful teaching in-person or online environment
- Active professional development agenda
- Interest in community engagement
