Description
The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. The position has an anticipated start date of August 2025. We are interested in applicants whose research focuses on GIScience, particularly in the use and development of geospatial big data and new spatial analytical methods, including spatial statistics, GeoAI, and remote sensing, to address critical environmental and social science challenges. The successful applicant will join a dynamic group of faculty working closely with colleagues in the Spatial Analysis Research Center (SPARC) to advance innovative and interdisciplinary GIScience. As part of ASU’s investment in the spatial sciences, SPARC members will work to position ASU as a world leader in developing, applying, and teaching spatial-science techniques, lead developments of spatial methods, and advance the capacity of GIScience to generate new knowledge and innovative solutions through collaboration across disciplines.
The successful applicant will teach GIS-related courses in-person and online to GIS, geography, and Urban Planning majors, as well as contribute to the PhD program in GIScience. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a vigorous, externally-funded research program, generate peer-reviewed research, engage undergraduate and graduate students through effective teaching & mentoring, participate in service to the university and profession, and build productive relationships with faculty both within and beyond the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning.

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) advances the ASU mission and Charter through interdisciplinary research and discovery of public value. SGSUP advances geospatial knowledge for a complex world, emphasizing education, research, and applied solutions to urban and environmental problems. SGSUP houses research centers, including The Spatial Analysis Research Center (SPARC) and Urban Climate Research Center (UCRC), and has a recognized strength in human environmental systems, urban systems analysis, earth surface processes, transportation, and urban planning. SGSUP's personnel includes approximately 30 tenured and tenure-track faculty (with multiple members in the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences), nearly 20 career-track faculty, 150 graduate students, and more than 800 undergraduate majors. SGSUP offers a PhD program in Geographic Information Science, MA and PhD programs in Geography, a PhD in Urban Planning, an accredited professional Master’s program in Urban and Environmental Planning, a Master’s program of Advanced Studies in Geographic Information Systems, and graduate certificate programs in GIS and Transportation. Undergraduates major in geography, geographic information science, or urban planning, and majors and non-majors alike can obtain a certificate in Geographic Information Science. SGSUP is a major participant in the instructional and research activities of ASU, and many faculty are also affiliated with other schools across the university. Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- A PhD (or terminal degree) in Geography, GIScience, Remote Sensing, or a related field by the time of appointment
- A record of, or well-articulated commitment to, excellence in teaching and research
- Experience or interest in teaching in a variety of modalities (e.g., classroom, hybrid, online)
Desired Qualifications:
- A research focus with the potential to advance the mission of the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning and The Spatial Analysis Research Center
- A record of research publication in peer-reviewed venues
- A spatial thinker with a spirit for interdisciplinary research, especially in SGSUP and ASU- focused areas of excellence, including climate, planning, health, and human-environmental sciences
- Experience in the development and writing of successful research proposal
- Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students and communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter
