Job Description

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office is seeking an Assistant Director of Undergraduate Research Initiatives. Under the direction of the Senior Director of Online Engagement and Strategic Initiatives, the Assistant Director fulfills an integral role in overseeing and managing various initiatives related to undergraduate research within The College. The Assistant Director will also work closely with leadership and staff in the Futures Center as well as the Office Student and Academic Programs for alignment and effective implementation of initiatives related to undergraduate research.

The Assistant Director will be responsible for maintaining research opportunities supported by The College for both online and immersion students and will work with faculty and staff members offering these research opportunities to ensure their quality. This may include providing workshops and creating training materials to support faculty and staff. The role will support faculty and staff in student recruitment as well as in marketing the research opportunities. This role will also facilitate undergraduate research symposiums hosted by The College both in-person and also virtually.

The Assistant Director will recruit and train peer student leaders who will support their fellow undergraduate researchers. This role will help to develop new courses and provide seminars to undergraduates interested in research and related activities. The Assistant Director will collect and use data and reports to manage aspects of enrollment management, assessment, evaluation, and student outcomes related to the undergraduate research initiatives.

The College Dean’s Office is a team-based and results-oriented work environment that serves students with many interests and backgrounds. We strive to create experiences for our online and immersion students that are both personal and can be implemented at scale.

This is an in-person position located on ASU’s Tempe Campus that may provide limited opportunities for remote work of up to 2 days a week. Dean or vice president-level approval is required.

Essential Duties

  • Maintain and update research opportunities for online and on-campus students offered by The College each semester.
  • Support faculty and staff members within The College who offer research opportunities to undergraduate students through recruitment and marketing.
  • Develop supporting documents and training materials to aid faculty and staff members who work with undergraduate students in research.
  • Assess and evaluate the research opportunities offered by The College each semester.
  • Oversee tasks related to budgeting each semester for overall program maintenance.
  • Support and facilitate both in-person and virtual research symposiums.
  • Recruit and train peer student leaders who will be tasked with supporting other undergraduate students engaged in research.
  • Develop and teach courses that prepare students to engage in undergraduate research.
  • As required, represent The College at college and university-level meetings as well as collaborate on cross-unit teams or projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND six (6) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Ten (10) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master’s degree and 1-3 years of experience in managing undergraduate research or student-success related programs.
  • Experience in teaching or mentoring students in a university environment.
  • Experience in developing and leading student success programs (particularly those that focus on student involvement in high impact practices).
  • Experience working with faculty in the development of new courses.
  • Experience working with both online and immersion student populations.
  • Experience in using student data to make informed decisions regarding program implementation and improvement.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices to improving college student success.
  • Experience working in teams and using collaboration to produce desired outcomes.
  • Experience using student information systems such as PeopleSoft, Handshake, and Salesforce.
  • Experience in maintaining effective working relationships with faculty, students, and other university administrators.
  • Evidence of strong written communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of a student population.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
