Job Description

Under the direction of the Director, the Assistant Director will supervise, train, coach, and evaluate assigned staff. The Assistant Director will assist in the development of comprehensive annual work plans in accordance with Gear Up grant goals and objectives. Gear Up program participants are currently enrolled in several different post-secondary institutions, including Arizona State University. All programs and initiatives within Access ASU focus on preparing students for enrollment and success in higher education.

The ideal candidate must work well independently in a fast-paced, flexible environment, provide a high level of customer service to both the university and external communities, and make strong contributions both as an individual and as a team player. This position requires evidence of effective time management skills, success in being accountable for specific outcomes, a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a learning mindset.

This is a grant funded position. Continuation is contingent on future grant funding.

Position is IN PERSON at the ASU Tempe location with frequent travel to other ASU locations, Monday through Friday 8am-5pm, some evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Essential Duties

  • Specific duties and responsibilities may include but not limited to work as part of a team to support Access ASU and GEAR UP programs and goals.
  • Coordinate communication and collaboration in support of GEAR UP initiatives.
  • Gather, maintain, analyze, and submit data reports related to grant goals for GEAR UP teams and Access ASU.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with school, community, and University partners.
  • Maintain consistent and effective communication with internal and external partners.
  • Provide guidance and feedback to GEAR UP teams.
  • Support strategic planning and events as needed.
  • Supervise professional staff, including onboarding, training, and ongoing coaching.
  • Attend ongoing professional development and training opportunities.
  • Regularly travel to off-campus meetings and events, as needed. Transportation will not be provided by the department/ASU
  • Represent Access ASU and ASU GEAR UP at events and serve on various department and university committees; perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND six (6) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Ten (10) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master's degree in Education or related field.
  • Experience working with higher education institutions.
  • Experience working with diverse populations (including first generation and low‐income students and families).
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and program/activity plans.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and prioritizing workload.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic computer skills, including use of MS Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access, Outlook), social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, etc.), Google Drive and ASU computer systems (e.g., PeopleSoft, Salesforce, Canvas, etc.).

  • Sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Work collaboratively across various departments within the University as well as with diverse populations and groups.
  • Use computers effectively – including inputting, reviewing and retrieving information, extended periods of viewing screen and using mouse and keyboard.
