Action Lab seeks a motivated and skilled Research Analyst Assistant to join our high-performing interdisciplinary research team. Action Lab is a learning laboratory inside EdPlus that provides data-driven strategies and research findings that enhance our learning and transformational project portfolios and aims to make change at ASU with data and scholarship. With an emphasis on online learning, our predictive and evaluative analyses support student success and persistence from curiosity to graduation. Action Lab works on transformational projects that aim to increase the reach, breadth, and scale of learning through research committed to improving equity, inclusivity, and the quality of education for learners everywhere. Our research is actionable and operationally oriented, and
we support and coordinate with high-level university stakeholders to improve student learning,
motivation, and persistence and to increase equity across the university. We are a fast-paced unit that
gets stuff done and makes a difference in the lives of our ASU students to drive change and bolster
successes grounded in data and research.
This position will directly contribute to the scholarly research and general data analysis for a variety of
projects, many of which are innovative, highly visible, enterprise-level projects. Key responsibilities
include data collection, analysis, and management of research protocols with IRB. This role involves
designing surveys or studies to assess educational interventions, conducting interviews, surveys, and
classroom observations, and learning to organize large datasets with statistical software. Additionally,
research support includes conducting literature reviews to summarize findings on educational
innovations, managing participant recruitment and coordination, and staying updated on educational
research trends. Responsibilities also include supporting ethical compliance, handling participant
consent, and ensuring all activities meet Institutional Review Board (IRB) guidelines.
Further duties encompass administrative and technical support. These include coordinating project
timelines, maintaining research records, and assisting principal investigators (PIs) and researchers to start
and complete studies. Additionally, the role involves report writing and dissemination, such as drafting
research summaries, formatting documents, and preparing conference materials. The position may also
involve supporting educational technology use, troubleshooting tools, and customizing learning
management systems for research purposes to evaluate their effectiveness in teaching and learning.
Action Lab is a matrixed organization, which means that depending on a given project or a project phase,
a researcher may report through different work streams. While this position will officially report to a
senior researcher on the team, this researcher will work closely with other researchers and leadership
who contribute to scholarly research efforts. As an integral component of the various projects, this
researcher will work collaboratively with other Action Lab researchers, staff, and faculty to co-manage
the efforts through the execution of research protocols and to analyze, coordinate, and maintain
research information. The ideal candidate for this position will bring strong skills in data management
and a strong knowledge of research methodologies and applications in real-world settings.
Essential Duties:
- Manage and organize large datasets, including cleaning, coding, and data entry into statistical software or databases.
- Conduct literature reviews to support ongoing projects or proposals, summarizing findings on educational innovation, learning outcomes, and pedagogical methods.
- Recruit and schedule study participants (e.g., students, instructors) and manage participant
- Coordinate project timelines, schedule meetings, and communicate with team members to support principal investigators (PIs) and researchers.
- Maintain accurate records of research protocols, IRB applications, and progress reports in our Google Drive space and other virtual databases.
- Ensure all research activities comply with ethical guidelines and university policies, particularly Institutional Review Board (IRB) standards for human subjects research.
- Manages a high volume of research files; tracks, manages, prioritizes, and reports daily, weekly, and monthly tasks.
- Assists with the Research Management ecosystem (Zotero).
- Completes all gift card distribution and other stipend distributions to participants.
- Contribute to research reports, conference presentations, and publications by preparing drafts, formatting documents, cleaning up for writing format (such as APA), and generating graphs and tables. Prepare materials for educational conferences or workshops.
- Assist in designing and implementing surveys, experiments, and observational studies to assess educational interventions as needed.
- Collect data through interviews, surveys, focus groups, classroom observations, and learning management systems (LMS) as needed.
- Assist in analyzing quantitative or qualitative data using statistical software (e.g., R) and qualitative analysis tools (e.g., NVivo, ATLAS.ti) as needed.
- Assist with interpreting results and preparing data visualizations or summaries for reporting purposes as needed.
- Assumes or coordinates other duties or projects as assigned or directed.
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated skills in data management and statistical analysis, as well as an ability to learn.
- Proven familiarity and experience with qualitative data and analysis tools (e.g., NVivo, ATLAS.ti).
- Evidence of knowledge of executing research designs to elicit defensible and co-informed research findings.
- Demonstrated experience with IRB and related training and is CITI certified.
- Demonstrated experience managing various data files (e.g., audio, R, Excel).
- Flawless command of English in both written and verbal formats.
- Evidence of broad experience/interests in various statistical abilities and interest in developing skills to match needs in these areas.
- Evidence of effective communication and collaboration skills.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to work in a highly matrixed and team environment.
- Experience in higher education research and practice preferred.
- Master’s degree preferred; will consider candidates who are close to their defense date/ABD with a plan to finish within a reasonable timeframe.

Working Environment
EdPlus at ASU is located at SkySong, the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center. The center houses a diverse business community that links technology, research, education, and entrepreneurship to position ASU and Greater Phoenix as global leaders in the knowledge economy.
Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting or standing. Daily use of desktop or laptop computer is required. Ability to clearly communicate verbally in English, read, write, see, and hear to perform essential duties. Regular review of completed tasks.
EdPlus at ASU supports flexible work options, ranging from alternate work schedules to hybrid remote work schedules, subject to approvals per ASU policy. (This is not a fully remote position.)
