The W. P. Carey Center for Real Estate and Finance in the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University is seeking an Research Economist with open rank (Assistant Research Economist, Associate Research Economist, or Research Economist). This is a non-tenure track academic professional appointment with a 12-month fixed term fiscal-year contract that is renewable annually, with a potential start date in January 2025.

Job Description: The Research Economist will conduct applied research in real estate aimed at providing valuable insights to inform practice and policy relevant to Arizona and the Southwest for internal and external constituents in government, business, and academia. Real estate is broadly defined and spans the housing, industrial, and commercial sectors, as well as financial, socioeconomic, policy, trade, legal, land, and local market issues.

The Research Economist must possess strong quantitative and analytical skills that are used to manage and analyze large data sets, design and implement surveys, and contribute to the creation of white and academic papers. In addition, the Research Economist should have a demonstrated ability to communicate key findings to general audiences with integrity and objectivity. Work is often conducted independently on end-to-end execution of a project, but collaborative team projects are also expected, depending on experience of the researcher and scope of the project.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts real estate research, writing policy briefs, economic impact studies, and other research, using R, GIS, STATA, EViews, Excel, and other computer-based tools.
  • Collaborates to write reports and make presentations of findings to general audiences.
  • Collects and evaluates economic data, creating and managing databases.
  • Conducts literature searches.
  • Analyzes local, state, and larger regional real estate markets, drawing comparisons to the nation and with other states.
  • Actively participates in business development efforts by leveraging contacts and/or contributing to grant proposals in government, business, or community sectors.
  • Assists in planning, design, and execution of research projects and preparation of research proposals. Research Economists may serve as Primary Investigator with leadership expectations and primary responsibility for end-to-end execution.
  • Assists in the dissemination of W. P. Carey work via social media, print or other media outlets.
  • Engages in special projects for the benefit of the Center.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • For an Assistant Research Economist: A Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Real Estate, Urban Planning or related field.
  • For Associate Research Economist or Research Economist: An advanced degree in Economics, Finance, Real Estate, Urban Planning or a closely related field and/or significant experience commensurate with rank.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills.
  • High standard of excellence and research integrity.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior experience as a Research Economist specifically serving business or policy clients related to real estate.
  • Experience in economic research, fiscal and economic impact analysis, regional economics, report writing, and/or business development.
  • Expertise in econometric packages (R, STATA, EViews, or equivalents).
  • Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Familiarity with Arizona real estate markets and related institutions (e.g., tax structure, laws, government makeup).
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
