Job Description

The Director of the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (SRR) is responsible for leadership and direction of SRR and provides direct oversight for conduct investigations for students, immersion and digital, across all ASU locations. The Director oversees the SRR leadership team, contributing to the strategic direction and vision of the department. This role supervises department professional staff (including assistant and associate directors) and indirectly supervises administrative and investigative staff. The director also serves as a strategic partner to University Housing ensuring that residential life staff who act on behalf of SRR provide high quality investigations and documentation. The Director serves as a critical partner to other ASU and community agencies in support of the implementation of the Arizona Board of Regents Student Code of Conduct.

The Director reports to the Associate Dean of Students. This position if primarily based out of the TEMPE campus.

Essential Duties

Strategic Leadership & Administration
  • Lead the Office of SRR, including the effective management of university student disciplinary procedures and oversight of all student conduct investigations, such as individual and organizational cases, and student Title IX matters.
  • Oversee the daily operations of SRR processes to ensure consistent investigation and adjudication of ABOR Student Code of Conduct infractions across all ASU locations, serving as a key resource for the Associate Dean on departmental requirements and trends.
  • Represent SRR and the Office of the Dean of Students by supporting the success of EOSS, participating in university committees, workgroups, and fulfilling assigned responsibilities.
  • Resolve departmental issues and implement measures to improve operational effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Provide oversight of departmental operations, including managing front desk staff, preparing data-driven reports, and overseeing various internal communications.
  • Participates in planning, developing, and administering department budget.

Training, Development & Supervision
  • Supervise, train, & evaluate department staff to ensure best practices in Title IX and student conduct investigations are effectively integrated into their work.
  • Provide training, consultations, and policy interpretation for students, faculty, staff, and community members regarding the Student Code of Conduct and associated processes.
  • Stay informed on current trends in student conduct through professional development and facilitate educational workshops to enhance staff knowledge.

Student Support & Educational Development
  • Research, develop, and implement effective educational sanctions and tools designed to help students understand their rights and responsibilities.
  • Investigate and adjudicate allegations of student misconduct, with a focus on fostering student ethical development, as necessary.
  • Serve on the Student Assistance Coordination Committee to address issues like threats, aggression, sexual misconduct, and mental health concerns.
  • Create, edit, and distribute documents, presentations, reports, and educational materials to support educational goals.
  • Provide regular updates to supervisor regarding the status of complaints and progress of ongoing investigations.

Policy, Compliance & Data Management
  • Ensure compliance with relevant federal, state, and local laws and policies, including Title IX, the Clery Act, and FERPA, while managing the completion of public records requests, conduct checks, and related reporting.
  • Assist with revising policies to maintain alignment with the ABOR student code of conduct, disciplinary processes, and grievance procedures.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data to demonstrate outcomes of goals and objectives, and monitor and track required outcomes and sanctions per the Student Code of Conduct using the student conduct database.

Community Engagement and Collaboration
  • Build and maintain relationships with external partners (e.g., police, sheriff, prosecutor’s office) on student conduct matters and serve as a liaison to other university departments for conduct case management.
  • Engage with students, faculty, staff, families, and community partners to foster a work environment that values respect for diversity and the development of skills to connect with various populations.
  • Attend and participate in student and institutional events, including those held in the evenings and on weekends.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Student Services, Education, or a directly related discipline AND three years progressively responsible experience in related discipline, which includes three years supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Justice Studies, Social Work, Law Enforcement, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of college student development principles and practices, with the ability to apply them effectively.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and/or training in Title IX, VAWA, FERPA, Clery Act, and other applicable laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of social media, public record searches, and public records requests.
  • Demonstrated investment in the holistic growth and development of staff.
  • Evidence of effective staff supervision skills, with knowledge of best practices in human resource management and development.
  • Experience conducting high-level investigations, including cases of sexual harassment, assault, violence, and organizational misconduct, such as hazing.
  • Evidence of trauma-informed practice training.
  • Knowledge of investigative techniques and holistic approaches to conflict resolution, including student development frameworks.
  • Experience in conflict mediation, resolution, and crisis management skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Experience in building rapport and work effectively with diverse students, staff, faculty, administrators, and community members.
  • Experience with student housing management, including handling behavioral issues within residential settings.
  • Experience working with student clubs, organizations, fraternities/sororities, and athletics.
  • Experience developing and assessing learning outcomes.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage a large workload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications; experience with WorkDay and Maxient or similar systems.
