Description

Arizona State University School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering is seeking exceptional candidates to join our team building and launching a medical school preparing students to practice and innovate at the rapidly evolving nexus of medicine and technology. Associate Teaching Professors will develop and teach a pre-clerkship medical school curriculum that integrates engineering, health humanities, and health systems science and incorporates emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence to advance and improve healthcare in Arizona and beyond.
Associate Teaching Professor positions are full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible, non-tenure-eligible, and renewable on an academic year basis contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the university. Applicants should have a broad grasp of one or more of the following disciplines:

  • Pathology
  • Histology/Pharmacology
  • Physiology
  • Biochemistry
  • Microbiology

Applicants should have experience serving as course directors or discipline leaders for medical school curricula and a record of innovative approaches to curricular design and delivery. These positions will entail 80% teaching and 20% service/scholarly activity. Responsibilities will include leadership of one or more of the pre-clerkship courses, development of cases that integrate basic sciences with clinical care, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to integrate engineering, the health humanities, and health systems science into the pre-clerkship curriculum using evidence-based and student-centered teaching strategies.

The School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering resides under the broader ASU Health initiative, which aims to improve health-related outcomes for the citizens of Arizona while promoting innovative models of education at the intersections of health and technology. Launching on the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus, the School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering will integrate clinical medicine, biomedical science, and engineering disciplines to train doctors who provide exceptional patient care and think holistically about health care solutions.

Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Direct one or more of the pre-clerkship courses.
  • Develop and deliver innovative content for the pre-clerkship curriculum that incorporates emerging technologies such as AI and utilizes evidence-based and student-centered teaching strategies, including active learning, flipped-classroom, case-based, and team-based teaching methodologies.
  • Develop and implement case-based simulation scenarios, including standardized patients, virtual patients, VR/AR simulations, and other formats.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate engineering, health humanities, and health systems science into the pre-clerkship curriculum.
  • Develop and implement methodologies to assess medical student performance.
  • Mentor and advise medical students, fostering their academic and professional development.
  • Participate in school-wide activities and events and promote a culture of ethical care, community engagement, interprofessional collegiality, and student and staff wellbeing.

Qualifications

Required Qualification

  • PhD degree (Ph.D.) or terminal degree in any of the disciplines listed within the position description or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
  • Leadership experience serving as a course director and/or discipline leader in a medical school curriculum, with expertise in one or more of the disciplines listed within the position description.
  • Record of innovative approaches to curricular design and delivery, including the use of emerging technologies and evidence-based and student-centered teaching strategies to improve learning outcomes.

Desired Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience teaching at a medical school in one or more of the disciplines listed within the position description.
  • Strong commitment to education aligned with the mission and goals of the School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering and the Arizona State University charter.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring medical students.
  • Evidence of collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to design curricula.
  • Active participation in the higher education community (for example, authoring educational and scientific publications, presenting at national conferences, serving in leadership roles for professional associations, etc.).
