The School of Applied Sciences and Arts (SASA) within the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts on the Arizona State University Polytechnic Campus invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor for the Writers’ Studio First-Year Composition program. The successful candidate will teach a 4/4 course load of First-Year Composition courses and have a 20% service component to their contract. We are especially interested in candidates with experience in online writing instruction who understand the unique challenges of teaching writing in digitally mediated environments. The Assistant Teaching Professor position is a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure eligible position renewable on an academic year basis contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the university. This is a 9-month contract that begins August 16, 2025.

The School of Applied Sciences and Arts (SASA) delivers science and liberal arts courses to students from all majors at the Polytechnic and Downtown campuses. Over 170 faculty serve over 4,400 majors in career-focused applied-learning programs, ranging from undergraduate applied biology majors in pre-vet, pre-dental, and horticulture programs to majors in interdisciplinary studies, the history of science, technology, and innovation, and STS (science, technology, and society). Our students also pursue graduate work in Applied Biology, Liberal Studies, Narrative Studies, and Integrative Social Sciences. SASA is the proud home of one of the nation’s first degrees in Military and Veterans Studies, and we are committed to the robust support of veteran and military-affiliated students through our Office for Veteran and Military Academic Engagement (OVMAE). Essential Functions:

  • Teaching includes delivering online First Year Composition course instruction for Writers' Studio as assigned by the faculty head/school director to constitute 80% course load for the position
  • Provide service to the program, School, College, University, Public, profession and community to constitute no more than 20% of the assigned workload
  • Work with Instructional Designers and Faculty Head to develop course syllabi; review and evaluate effectiveness of teaching methods and work activities
  • Apply innovative teaching techniques and deliver excellence in teaching of the defined content for assigned courses
  • Maintain trainings for the course platforms

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD or terminal degree in Rhetoric/Composition, English, or a related field at time of appointment
  • Two years of teaching experience in a post-secondary environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing the aims of the ASU Charter and Design Aspirations through teaching and/or service

Desired Qualifications:

  • Two years of online teaching experience in a post-secondary environment Evidence of effective teaching
  • Experience developing composition curriculum specifically for an online post-secondary environment
  • Evidence of teaching excellence
  • Evidence of scholarly or creative activities aligned with your degree
  • Evidence of participation in relevant professional development
