The W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University is seeking applications from those interested in a postdoctoral research scholar position.

This position is available under the supervision of Professor Michael Hanemann, Director of the Center for Environmental Economics and Sustainability Policy. The postdoctoral research associate will conduct research in the economics of water to assess economic, financial and social impacts associated with potential reductions in the delivery of Colorado River water to the Central Arizona Project and/or increased ground water extraction in the Phoenix and Pinal Groundwater Active Management Areas. The research will also assess economic, political and legal strategies to mitigate those potential economic, financial and social impacts.

This position has an anticipated start date of Summer/Fall 2025.

This is a full time (1.0) benefits-eligible appointment with a fiscal year salary of $76,000.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducts economic research, writing policy briefs, fiscal and economic impact studies, and other economic research, using output from a variety of computer-based tools.
  • Collaborates with technical staff to write reports and make presentations of findings to clients and potential media outlets.
  • Collects and evaluates economic data, creating and managing databases.
  • Actively participates in outreach efforts with water user communities in the study area.
  • Assists in planning and design and execution of research projects and preparation of research proposals.
  • Conducts literature searches. Responds to requests for economic information from the media and general public and writes news releases.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: All applicants must hold a minimum of a doctoral degree with research experience in economics and related areas. Applicant must have degree conferred before the start date.

Desired Qualifications: Experience in water resource economics. Experience with econometric software (Stata or R). Experience with spatial data analysis and related software (ARC-GIS, Python, etc).

Preferred applicants will have demonstrated skills in implementing research, and the ability to produce verbal and written communication appropriate for the range of audiences, including scholarly reports and publications. Candidates should have demonstrated interpersonal skills that foster teamwork and collaboration, the ability to work effectively individually and as part of a large interdisciplinary team, and the ability to coordinate multiple academic projects.
