Description

The School of International Letters and Cultures (SILC) at ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY (ASU) invites applications for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor in Italian with a specialization in face-to-face and/or online language program coordination and administration and/or specific expertise in L2 and Second Language Acquisition. The appointment begins August 16, 2026.

This is an in-person, full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure eligible appointment made on an academic year basis (Aug. 16 – May 15). A typical full-time course load is four classes per academic semester. Subsequent annual renewal is possible contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, the needs of the university, and sufficient enrollment in assigned courses.

This position provides leadership in coordinating the Italian language program, including administrative and curriculum development responsibilities, and support the program’s immersive (in-person) and online course offerings. The candidate will also be expected to teach Italian language/culture courses at the 100- through 400-level, both in-person and online and work closely with the Italian section head to develop course materials, assignments, assessments, syllabi, and experiential learning opportunities for students, such as internships.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide leadership in coordinating the Italian language program, including administrative and curriculum responsibilities
  • Oversee the in-person and online Italian Language Program, managing both administrative and curricular responsibilities.
  • Work closely with the Italian section head to develop course materials, assignments, assessments, syllabi, and experiential learning opportunities for students, such as internships.
  • Teach Italian language and culture courses at the 100 through 400 levels, both in-person and online. A typical full-time load is 4 courses per semester.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Italian Studies/Second Language Acquisition/Applied Linguistics/Foreign Language Education by the time of appointment.
  • Proficiency in both Italian and English.
  • At least 2 years of demonstrated experience in developing and coordinating face-to-face and/or online courses and/or programs.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Research focus or interest in teaching methodologies, Second Language Acquisition or related area.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in leadership, supervision, and coordination of Italian Language Programs at the post-secondary level.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in university-level teaching, including Italian hybrid and/or online courses.
  • Knowledge of the ACTFL proficiency scale for foreign languages and its application in language programs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students, and communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter.
