The Team

The Global Growth & Opportunity (GGO) division works to catalyze sustainable and transformative socio-economic change. The Agricultural Development (AgDev) program strategy team (PST) aims to catalyze country-led, inclusive, agricultural transformation (IAT) by developing and scaling products, services, policies, and system-wide innovations that benefit small scale producers, empower women, and improve nutritional outcomes. We want farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and South Asia (SA) to be empowered with the knowledge, tools, and technologies to improve their livelihoods and lift themselves and their families out of poverty.

Your Role

The Manager, Strategy, Planning, & Management (SPM) is pivotal in guiding the strategic and operational frameworks within the AgDev team. This role will work in close collaboration with the Deputy Director, Strategy, Planning, and Management (DDSPM) and Senior Officer, SPM to oversee strategic planning processes, annual planning and budgeting, and ongoing pipeline and portfolio management. A key responsibility includes managing a team of Senior/Program Assistants to drive critical operational initiatives and the Rhythm of the Business (ROB) across the AgDev pillars. This position is instrumental in implementing business strategies across the team and ensuring efforts are synchronized with overarching organizational objectives.


What You’ll Do

Management of Program Assistant Team (40%):

  • Lead and Mentor Program Assistants: Direct and mentor a team of 8 Senior/Program Assistants to implement the Rhythm of the Business and key business strategies across AgDev. Ensure that team activities are closely aligned with broader organizational objectives and strategic initiatives.
  • Enhance Team Performance and Strategic Alignment: Develop and execute strategies to boost team performance, aligning closely with organizational goals. Focus on workload management and capacity planning to enhance operational efficiency and optimize team productivity.
  • Resource and Workload Management: Manage resources effectively to ensure that all team members are motivated and equipped to succeed. Maintain a strong focus on balancing workloads and fostering sustainable work practices that support team well-being and efficiency.
  • Recruitment and Team Culture Development: Oversee the recruitment and onboarding processes, and provide regular performance feedback, coaching, and development. Cultivate a positive and inclusive team culture that encourages professional growth and a sense of belonging among team members.
  • Organize Professional Development Opportunities: Schedule regular learning sessions and professional development workshops to promote continuous knowledge enhancement and growth opportunities. Tailor these initiatives to meet the varying capacity levels and professional aspirations of team members, facilitating their career advancement and skill development.

Portfolio Management Support for Senior Officer, SPM (35%)

  • Design and Manage Projects: Support the design of and manage special projects that boost team operations and enhance programmatic investments. Ensure these projects are strategically aligned and effectively support broader organizational goals.
  • Develop and Implement Success Metrics: Create and maintain robust tools to track progress towards strategic outcomes and facilitate the analytical processes for regular updates to stakeholders.
  • Enhance Leadership Team Portfolio Management and Visibility: Assist the Senior Officer, SPM, in supporting the leadership team's portfolio management. Focus on improving visibility and fostering cross-team knowledge sharing. Develop strategies that ensure transparency and ongoing communication about portfolio progress, aligning efforts across pillar teams to achieve organizational objectives.

Knowledge Management & Communications (25%)

  • Develop and Implement Knowledge Management Strategy: Collaborate with the DDSPM and Senior Officer, Insights & Learning, to lead the development and implementation of a PST-wide knowledge management and learning strategy. Utilize the expertise of direct reports to establish and maintain a streamlined, standardized process for knowledge storage (i.e., SharePoint) and dissemination across various pillar teams. Ensure that the Program Assistants are actively involved in this process, aligning their efforts with the broader objectives of the AgDev pillars.
  • Streamline Internal Communications with Key Stakeholders: Work closely with the DDSPM, Senior Officer, SPM, and Program Assistants to enhance internal communications. This includes the coordination of team and division newsletters, AgDev team meetings, retreats, and other communication projects. Leverage the capabilities of Program Assistants to ensure these initiatives are effectively executed and contribute to team cohesion and information sharing.
  • Enhance Onboarding and Continuous Learning: Develop comprehensive onboarding materials and manage the SPM hub to facilitate the smooth integration of new employees and foster continuous learning within the team. Coordinate with Program Assistants to keep these resources updated and accessible, ensuring they are tailored to support the unique needs of the AgDev pillars.


Your Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • Advanced portfolio and people/team management skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of program management of complex strategy development, execution planning, and business process redesign projects.
  • Advanced ability to create structures and develop frameworks to increase clarity and transparency of decisions, trade-offs, and impact on financial and organizational resources.
  • Financial acumen and budget development, financial analysis, and operational management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to identify and communicate external and internal dynamics, as well as articulate implications for strategy, priorities, and team evolution.
  • Experience leading complex initiatives with budget responsibility.
  • Experience in project management and leading or managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience in strategy development.

The salary range for this role is $137,500 to $206,200 USD. We recognize high-wage market differences in Seattle and Washington D.C., where our offices are located. The range for this role in these locations is $149,800 to $224,600 USD. As a mission-driven organization, we strive to balance competitive pay with our mission. New hire salaries are typically between the range minimum and the midpoint. Actual placement in the range will depend on a candidate’s job-related skills, experience, and expertise, as evaluated during the interview process.
