External Investing Group (“XIG”)

The External Investing Group (“XIG”) provides investors with investment and advisory solutions, across leading hedge fund managers, private equity funds, real estate managers, public equity strategies and fixed income strategies. XIG manages globally diversified programs, targeted sector-specific strategies, customized portfolios, and a range of advisory services. Our investors access opportunities through new fund commitments, fund-of-fund investments, strategic partnerships, secondary-market investments, co-investments, and seed-capital investments. With over 350 professionals across 11 offices around the world, XIG provides manager diligence, portfolio construction, risk management, and liquidity solutions to investors, drawing on Goldman Sachs’ market insights and risk management expertise. We extend these global capabilities to the world’s leading sovereign wealth funds, pension plans, governments, financial institutions, endowments, foundations, and family offices, for which we invest or advise on over $300 billion of alternative investments, public equity strategies and fixed income strategies.

The XIG Platform Management team broadly is responsible for portfolio implementation and trading, liquidity management, executing equity and currency hedging programs, portfolio construction and monitoring, external manager on-boarding, product development and launch, overseeing the business control framework as well as a number of strategic growth initiatives. The team works in concert with the investment and client teams within XIG, and with functional teams across the AWM division including Central Trading, Fund Accounting, Operations, Technology, Legal, and Compliance. Within Platform Management, specific teams focus on discrete investment platform and portfolio activities. This individual will focus on managing the end-to-end operating platform for XIG’s hedge fund separately managed account (SMA) investment program (“Program”) and will be integral to contributing to the strategic thinking and direction of the Program.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Overall responsibility for all business and operating aspects of the Program across single and multi-manager SMA portfolios
  • The candidate will be partnered with the investment team, and will lead the hedge fund manager agreement negotiation, and be the primary relationship owner for the investment with the COO, CFO etc
  • Manage the middle office and treasury functions for the Program. This will be in collaboration with service providers but is a critical element of the role
  • Responsible for counterparty monitoring and active management of Program margin and financing. Mange the overall street relationships
  • Lead role in counterparty agreement negotiations covering both cash and derivative products
  • Daily P&L and holdings reconciliation oversight, and responsible for all financial aspects of the Program to include NAV oversight and performance reporting
  • Represent the Program within XIG and across the business partner units to include Controllers, Compliance, Tax, Legal etc. Significant, daily interaction with all these cross-functional areas
  • Management of the key vendors to the Program to include fund administrators, auditor, SMA platform provider and trading/risk technology providers
  • Active role in Program marketing and investor due diligence

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • 12+ years of relevant industry experience; preferably within a hedge fund or within an asset manager’s hedge fund business. Experience with counterparty management/evaluation, P&L analysis and operating within/around a hedge fund program is required
  • SMA investment experience is a plus but not required
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of public markets and, in particular, hedge fund: i) investing, ii) fund structures, iii) market terms, iv) fund management and v) operating dynamics
  • Strong management, communication, analytical, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Enthusiastic, self-starter with demonstrated orientation toward managing sensitive and business critical initiatives and negotiations
  • Demonstrated ability to influence outcomes across multiple stakeholders
  • High level of proficiency with MS Excel required and prior experience with hedge fund execution and order management systems, middle-office technology and risk systems is a plus
  • Must be detail-oriented
